NY1 Survey Of State Senators Shows Toeiva Bill May Not Pass

pate.jpgAs members of the New York State Senate ponder whether to hold a vote on legalizing same-gender marriage before the current legislative session expires, an exclusive NY1 survey of all 62 state Senators suggests that supporters of the bill are facing an uphill battle in their fight to get it passed this month.

Twenty lawmakers tell NY1 that they would vote “yes” on the bill, with 15 either undecided or noncommittal. The measure would need 32 votes to pass.

According to the NY1 tally, if only four more undecided lawmakers oppose same-gender marriage, the bill would fail.

Among those who are undecided or undeclared are New York City Senators Hiram Monserrate of Queens, Carl Kruger of Brooklyn, Andrew Lanza of Staten Island, John Sampson of Brooklyn and Ruth Hassel-Thompson of The Bronx/Westchester.

The measure already passed the state Assembly and has the support of Governor David Paterson.

Here is the overall breakdown, with 32 votes needed to pass:

  1. Don’t be surprised if it gets through at the last minute. The childless people who are part of the group that benefit from this have a lot of money to through around. With 2 incomes and without the expense of children money in plentiful.

  2. New York has the big chance right now to break the toeva momentum, especially after they won in a number of states like Maine, Hashem Yerachaim. Yehi ratzon that good will win and the toeva people will lose decisively.

  3. The Toeva advocates are indefatigueable. They rely on the fact that their opponents will eventually tire of the constant battle and give up.

Our organizations must make it clear that we have the energy and the determination to keep fighting as long as necessary, until the tide of public opinion turns against this insanity.

  4. thank you #6. now we can write a short e-mail to all 4 together announcing our support for the Aibishter’s view on this, and standing up for what we believe in as Yiden.
