U.S. President Barack Obama tapped U.S. Circuit Judge Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court on Tuesday, officials said, making her the first Hispanic in history picked to wear the robes of a justice, major media confirm.
Sotomayor, 54, would succeed retiring Justice David Souter if confirmed by the Senate.
President Obama plans to announce his nominee to the Supreme Court Tuesday morning.
The announcement, set for 10:15 a.m. ET, comes after the president met with his legal team Monday at the White House to discuss the selection. He also read through written material on potential picks over the weekend at Camp David, according to a White House official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
The president has kept a tight lid on the identity of the nominee. As of midnight, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had not been given any notice of whom Obama had picked.
Sotomayor was born in The Bronx, New York to Puerto Rican parents. She grew up in a housing project in the South Bronx, just a short walk from the old Yankee Stadium. In 1976 Sotomayor married while still a student at Princeton University, and divorced in 1983.
President Clinton appointed her to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals back in 1998. She is a graduate of Princeton University and Yale Law School.
Sotomayor will be the third woman in history to serve on the nation’s highest court. There is currently only one woman on the high court, Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

This is pure racism. She was picked because she is hispanic and female. If a white were to pick a white male the left would scream racist. We need to stop looking at race and gender and choose objectively.
any yiddish blit?
I wonder what type of bomba kashes that she will come up with that she finds heterim in the Constitution.
another Ivy Leaguer with minimal career contacts with the real world (surprise?????) — the more things change, the more the stay the same
Her record on rights of religious minorities is good. She was initially appointed by President Bush (senior), and was a prosecutor. She’ll probably vote in a very similar manner to the person she replaced. Her academic record is typical Ivy League, which is to be expected (so is Obama’s). If she had been on the 9th Circuit (West Coast) court, she would have been considered a conservative.
I agree with Number 1.
To #1,
This is nothing new. Why do you think Obama is president -because all those who voted for him did so only because of his race. Most americans are centrists politically and don’t agree with his far left policies. The real racists in this country are the minorities (soon to be majorities). We can’t have real justice in this country like the death penalty for all murderers since most criminals are minorities, so they screamed racism and now murderers get away with murder.
To akuperma,
You’re probably right- you could call her conservative compared to other judges, but I don’t think there is a real conservative in our Supreme Court. When they outlaw abortion and reinstitute Shabbos Observers employment rights, then we will have a real conservative court, not just a conservative court in name only!
TO: CHARLIE HALL (NO. 9):
Yes, she’s qulified, all right–qualified to advance radical egalitarianism and discrimination against white people.
As an appelate judge, she refused to allow equal treatment for white firefighters in New Haven, Connecticut when their test results were thrown out by the City, because not enough blacks had passed the test. She is a racist, like Obama.
And, according to Jeff Rosen, of the New Rupublic (a Liberal publication), she’s not too sharp.
She’s not married, so she will likely not be too family-friendly in her rulings, just like the man she’s replacing–Souter.
Theis is a woman who has accumulated a lot of credentials based on her ethnicity–an affirmative action choice.
Another Benjamin Cardozo?–Don’t make me laugh, Charlie!
Part of her yichus is she ended the baseball strike back in 1995.
The main feature of her selection is that she is Hispanic? You cant read an article on her without reading she is Hispanic and overcame lifes’ ups and downs. I am bothered by what I read about her which is clearly unjust.
“In one of her most notable decisions, as an appellate judge she sided last year with the city of New Haven, Conn., in a discrimination case brought by white firefighters. The city threw out results of a promotion exam because too few minorities scored high enough. Coincidentally, that case is now before the Supreme Court.”
veryinteresting, let’s not forget who nominated her, Barack Obama. And let’s not forget who endorsed Barack Obama for president, Colin Powell. And let’s not forget who opposes them all; Rush Limbaugh! This is called guilt by association.
#13, guilt by association is not just or fair. It is a stretch, at best, used to try to validate one’s own views. Pigeon holing people and making assumptions that they are all carbon copies of each other on all issues is just not the right thing to do. With regards to Limbaugh, even a broken clock is right more often than he is.
While Obama is controversial, McCain was not up for the job and is a terrible Senator. The US would have continued to get washed away from the Bush/Cheney schemes.
While I did not vote for either of the two (would not vote for anyone who wants a two-state solution in Israel), I hope Obama does well and I believe he wants to do a good job, even though I dont agree with a lot he does.
To veryinteresting (no. 14):
Your naivte, concerning Obama’s intentions, is overwhelming!
#15: Well stated!
#14: You are again confusing him with the demagogue Savage, who was rightfully banned from the United Kingdom, a great democracy.
#1, was it racism when Bush appointed Alberto Gonzales?
Was it Racism when bush sr. first appointed Sotomayor to the bench?
Come on.
13, Bubby she was actually first appointed by George HW Bush.
While on multi judge panels she voted 95% of the time with her fellow republican appointed judges on those cases.
Choosing the first latino woman wouldnt have been any more racist that choosing the jewish woman who was also on the list.
Was Alberto Gonzales more qualified to be AG than anyone on the list when Bush chose him to be the first Hispanic AG? Same difference. Wouldn’t you say?
Anyway, many are saying that she wouldnt be the first hispanic justice and that someone else – a famous sepharidc jew named Benjamin N. Carodozo.
if you read stormfront, the horrible anti-semitic site, they are also upset that she was chosen. They even use the same arguments- she was chosen b/c of her race, not because she went to Yale and is a federal judge… think about whose company you want to keep.
Did she cheat on her taxes? If not, she just wouldn’t be eligible.
