You put your life in someone else’s hands when you board public transportation. But what if your driver isn’t paying proper attention?
A Brooklyn man videotaped his bus driver doing just about everything but minding the road — and it could cost the driver his job.
Imagine being stuck on a bus for four hours — with this guy as your bus driver.
It happened to Shelomo Alfassa and dozens of other passengers on a Peter Pan bus trip last month from Boston to New York.
“This is just a driver who basically is out of control,” Alfassa said.
Alfassa was sitting directly behind the bus driver — and shot video as the driver talked on his cell phone, dumped chips into his mouth and fumbled with papers, all while driving more than 60 mph.
“His hands were not on the wheel. It was raining. Cars were moving on the left. Trucks were moving on the right of him,” Alfassa said.
Alfassa was so afraid he said he called a safety officer from the bus and begged for the bus driver to be stopped.
Nothing happened.
So when he got to New York and learned the driver was heading back to Boston he went right to the ticket counter.
“I said ‘I have something which is a possible threat to people’s lives and we need to intervene right now,’ and they looked at me like I was from another planet,” Alfassa said.
Alfassa said it wasn’t until this video surfaced that he made headway.
The company’s vice president for safety and security, Christopher Creane, spoke with Alfassa Monday and spoke with CBS 2 HD hours ago.
“We were in shock to see such actions by the driver. We will absolutely fix any instances that arise. We’re gonna adjust policies so these incidents don’t happen again,” Creane said.
For now the driver, whose name has not been released, has been removed from service pending an investigation.
“They don’t need to fire him; they need to educate him,” Alfassa said.
After his harrowing experience Alfassa is now calling on Peter Pan to overhaul its safety standards. The company has assured him that they will.
