NYC may need a new area code within the next several years.
Assignable numbers for the 718 and 347 area codes will run out by 2011, while 212 and 646 numbers will run out by 2014, according to a report by the state Department of Public Service.
The widespread use of cell phones, smart phones and other mobile devices is being blamed for the number shortage.
The state Department of Public Service says there are two solutions being considered.
One is to come up with an area code that will encompass all five boroughs like 917, or to use a code that covers Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island.
DPS has not stated a preference for either option and the final decision will be made by the state Public Service Commission after a public comment period.
The public is invited to comment by calling 1-800-335-2120.

From what I remember NYC does not have the most area codes. I believe a city in Texas does.
Poshiter Yid, the ‘613’ area code is already in use, in Ottawa, Canada, just in case you’re interested! 🙂
