Brooklyn, NY – Councilman Simcha Felder (D – Brooklyn) urges New Yorkers to participate in the 2010 United States Census. In addition to computing the total population, the Census directly affects how resources and funding are allocated to each district. The U.S. Census Bureau conducts its survey by mail and door-to-door. Historically, New York City has a lower response rate then the rest of the country.
“It is vital that New Yorkers take part in the census so our communities have access to the resources and representation they deserve and need.” said Councilman Felder. “There are no consequences for responding to the Census survey or answering the door to Census-takers.”
Preliminary canvassing has already begun to ensure that address lists are accurate. In March 2010, the U.S. Census Bureau will mail surveys to all New Yorkers. Soon after, Census-takers will begin to visit homes that have not returned a completed survey. Help will be available for non-English speaking New Yorkers. The Census Bureau has set up assistance centers and will offer help by phone. Instruction booklets will also be available for up to fifty languages.
The Census Bureau conducts their survey by mail and door to door only; never by email. In the past scammers have sent out fraudulent emails in an attempt to gather personal information. It is safe to respond to official questionnaires sent by mail and door-to-door census-takers.
In addition, the Census Bureau is hiring part-time census takers. Visit http://2010.census.gov or call 1-866-861-2010 for more information.

Perhaps they might consider making an effort to hire frum census taker (and pay them real money).
Unfortunately for Brooklyn, Jews (along with Blacks and Hispanics) are historically among the groups most “afraid” of the census, which hurts in terms of aid for the district and in reapportionment.
To a certain extent, cooperation with the census is a function of trust in the government not to use the data for anything other than counting people, and that hasn’t always been the case.
Don’t be so accommodating, there was a story about someone who was tricked into letting a “census taker” into their home 10 years ago in Borough Park in broad daylight and was beaten and robbed.
