NYC Crime Remains Low Despite Economic Downturn

nypd4.gifThe economy may be dismal, but the recession doesn’t seem to be driving New Yorkers to commit crime.

The New York Police Department says the crime rate for the first three months of the year is the lowest since comparable record keeping began in the 1960s.

Through the end of March, overall crime dropped 13.5 percent. Crime is down in every major category, including homicides where there were 89.

That’s according to the NYPD CompStat program, which tracks crime statistics daily.

The city’s unemployment rate was 8.1 percent in March, up from 5.1 percent a year ago.

The city’s homicide rate reached an all-time high of 2,245 in 1990, making it the murder capital of the nation. Since then, the rate has plummeted.

NYC CompStat is a multilayered dynamic approach to crime reduction, quality of life improvement, and personnel and resource management that has been adopted by several police departments nationwide.
