More than 30 fire companies from Orange, Sullivan and Ulster counties are still at the scene Saturday night of what is being called a “major forest fire” that has spread for miles on both sides of Wurtsboro Mountain.
The brush fire is centered at Shawanga Lodge Road and Crane Road in the Sullivan County village of Bloomingburg. It is believed to have started early Saturday afternoon near Wurtsboro Airport, but spread rapidly.
Sullivan County Fire Coordinator Richard Martinkovic told the Associated Press that there is no imminent danger. Firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading to more than two dozen homes along a mountain ridge.
On Friday the National Weather Service declared a “red flag” warning for the region, meaning there were dry, windy conditions that are ripe for brush fires.
