Drivers will soon have to put down their phones while on Philadelphia roads.
The City Council Thursday unanimously passed a handheld cell phone ban for drivers on Thursday. The legislation requires that motorists use hands-free devices while talking on the phone.
Mayor Michael Nutter is expected to sign the bill, which would then take effect immediately.
Violators would face a fine of up to $300. In addition to motor vehicle operators, the ban would also apply to skateboarders, bicylists and in-line skaters.
Numerous other cities across the country have already banned handheld use by drivers. Several states, including New Jersey, New York, California and Washington, have statewide bans.
