NY Bank Robber Known For His Hats Sentenced

ar.gifA New York bank robber who disguised himself with an array of unusual hats has been sentenced to more than eight years in federal prison.

Prosecutors say Thomas Kenney donned a turban, a fedora, and a black hat worn by many Orthodox Jews during 13 holdups from Brooklyn to Suffolk County. He pleaded guilty in June 2008.

The robberies stymied authorities for two years until DNA evidence helped crack the case.

A bandage fell off the robber’s finger during a holdup. Investigators lifted DNA from the patch and matched it to genetic material on a glass Kenney had used at a restaurant.

U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Platt also ordered Kenney to pay $53,000 in restitution.
