Outgoing Defense Minister Ehud Barak on motzei Shabbos meet with US special Mideast envoy George Mitchell, who arrived for his second visit to Israel following his appointment in the new US administration.
According to Barak, the two discussed ongoing Israeli lowering of restrictions on PA (Palestinian Authority) areas throughout Yehuda and Shomron, a move that is being met with sharp objections by Jewish community leaders in those areas, a move they insist will place area residents in increased danger with the lowering of the IDF presence and the opening of additional roads to PA motorists.
The IDF is opening hundreds of closures that during recent years were placed in strategic areas to prevent attacks against Jewish motorist in Yosh areas. Despite a recent increase ‘Intifada’ type attacks against motorists, including some with gunfire and firebombs, the government remains adamant in its decision to comply with US pressure and reduce restrictions on PA residents.
Meanwhile, on the eve of her departure for her first visit to Israel as US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton told the media “we want to strengthen the Palestinian partner,” calling on the PA (Palestinian Authority) to accept the guidelines of the Quartet towards reaching a Mideast settlement.
Clinton is expected to arrive in Israel on Monday, and she will of course meet with the senior members of the outgoing administration, and more importantly, with incoming Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. The senior US official has invited Hamas to join in, to reach a coalition deal with Fatah, but added this must include the recognition of Israel’s right to exist, a move that Hamas leaders in Damascus and Gaza reject outright.
Armed with an over $10 million pledge, the secretary will also be attending the donors’ conference in Egypt, intended to raise funds to rebuild Gaza.
Secretary Clinton will be working with Mideast envoy George Mitchell, who arrived last week to begin laying the groundwork for her visit.
