(Click on image to ENLARGE) A cartoon published by the NY Post has many politicians publicly slamming the daily paper, and many are calling for a boycott of the paper.
A protest was held scheduled to be held today in front of the NY Post building in Manhattan, and was to be attended by NYC Councilman Charles Barron, Assembly Woman Inez Barron, State Senator Eric Adams, the Reverend Al Sharpton, and many others.
The cartoon which was published Feb 18th on page 12, depicted President Barack Obama as a monkey being shot and killed by Police Officers. (In reference to a pet chimp which was shot dead and by police officers in Connecticut – after mauling an innocent person.) It was posted the following day (HERE) on YWN after the Reverend Al Sharpton publicly slammed the Post.
THE FOLLOWING IS A STATEMENT GIVEN TO YWN FROM COUNCILMEMBER BILL DE BLASIO REGARDING THE NEW YORK POST CARTOON:
“We now live in a time when our nation can make real and substantive progress on race relations. However commentary, like the offensive cartoon published yesterday by the New York Post, only sets us back. There is a growing pattern of certain media outlets choosing sensationalism over sensitivity and fear over facts. All of us have a responsibility to demand better from the media and ourselves.”
STATEMENT BY COUNCILMAN CHARLES BARRON: “Shame on the New York Post. This ragsheet has hit an all time low. The cartoon is racist, threatens the life of our president, Barack Obama and offends an entire people. We are calling on the Justice Department to investigate the New York Post. Our community, city and country will not accept this.”

Offensive, racist, Darwinian, treasonous and perhaps illegal (making light of murdering the President). American racists have frequently compared blacks to apes, and indeed, the belief may be considered a “core belief” of social darwinism (i.e., the application of evolutionary theory to social problems).
P.S. It also defames chimps, by unfairly linking them to a piece of questionable legislation. Only politicians and lobbyists were involved, and all are allegedly humanoid.
Mr. Barron: you didn’t do well in Lit. class did you? The attack was on our congress leaders not the president. The ones who WROTE the bill are in congress. The president SIGNED it.
The silence is deafening. I have been amazed by the lack of comments on the web since the election (unless of course they are oh so politically correct). First of all, let me ask, since when can we expect better of the media. Conservatives have been being bashed by the media for years. All protected under freedom of the press/speech, differnces of opinion in a democracy and all that. Secondly, no where in the cartoon does it inidicate that the chimp respresents the president and as you point out it is drawing on the recent news story about the chimp. It could also be interpreted to mean that the stimulus package was not written by the president but by Nancy Pelosi and company. Further you might get from it that the stimulus package is so ridiculous that perhaps it was written by a chimp. IF it had been during a conservative presidency it would have been no problem to the liberals. This is a scary group that is runnning our country and it brooks no criticism and has no sense of humor.
Here we go again. All the left wing nut jobs who can’t stop for a moment and think for themselves will go jump on the Al Sharpton bandwagon.
Now let’s go through this, slowly, for you libs.
President Obama did not write the stimulus package. This huge monstrosity of a bill was written by staffers on the Hill. In fact, there is not one member of either house who can honestly claim that they read the bill, because there wasn’t “enough time” in the mad rush to get it done.
Nowhere in the cartoon did it “depict” the President as a chimp. It depicted Travis the chimp, as a chimp, with the insinuation that those unnamed staffers writing the bill have about the mental ability as Travis.
So, can you kindly explain how the cartoon is racist?
It is so easy to look at a cartoon, see a picture of a chimp, and say “ooh, that’s racist!!” The wise man stops and thinks, first.
What you report above is not correct. The cartoonist was aware that Obama did not draft the 1,071 pages of legislation in the stimulus bill. The job was given to Nancy Pelosi who had Congressional staffers draft the legislation. The cartoonist is depicting the monkey as representative of these staffers who he sees as crazed “over stimulated” monkeys. There is nothing but one’s negative imagination to suggest that the cartoonist intended any offense to President Obama.

Each person interprets pictures as he sees it. Only certain people, with limited knowledge and understanding see this cartoon in this offensive way. It is parody, taking the vicious attack by the chimpanzee ‘pet’ that was killed and using that as an allegory for the stimulus package. Unfortunately, some evil people can only think evil and look for it in everything and personalize things so they can cry’victim!’.When the cartoon came out showing Mohammed wearing a bomb in his turban, that was directed at the evil terrorists, not at any one person. It is a way of expressing an idea, nothing personal.
The monkey in the shooting is a reference to the old saying of “a million monkeys pounding on typewriters…” meaning that the stimulus bill was not written by people with any rational or logical reasoning, rather it was as if monkeys were pounding on typewriters and punched out the porkulus-liberal-agenda-wish-list bill. It is not a reference to Barack Obama as a black man.
Charles Barron is a racist, anti-semitic hypocrite. He should be ashamed of himself.
akuperma, Obama signed the legislation because he approves of it. Congress wrote it with Obama’s support.
I was thinking it depict the infinite monkey therom.
Whatever you think of the cartoon, if you don’t know that Obama proposed the bill to the senate or if you didn’t know that he even could then you’re quite uninformed
akuperma, making light of murdering the President is NOT illegal. Try reading the First Amendment. It is perfectly legal to make light of anything one likes, including killing the president. It is even perfectly legal to advocate anything one likes, including killing the president. It would even be perfectly legal, at a protest against the return of conscription, to say that “if they ever make me carry a rifle the first man I want to get in my sights is Barack Obama”.
There is really very little that one may NOT say in the USA. True threats. Incitement to immediate violence. Malicious libel. Fraud. But expressions of opinion are always protected speech.
For eight years we’ve put up with President Bush being called “Chimpy”, and heard not a word of protest from anybody on the left. So now the left can shut up and take what they were so willing to dish out. I have no respect for Obama, and will call him whatever I like. He’s a water buffalo.
#11, even if this cartoon is directed at Obama, I don’t see anything racist about it. It’s simply saying that he is a bumbling fool. Bush was called things far worst, but no one said anything then.
And what does the Post’s tzinus standard have to do with anything? Does this somehow make the cartoon racist?
mw13: (#11, #15) As you can see, the monkey was unclad!! That makes the cartoonist a racist menuval!!
i actually find the cartoon pretty funny!!!
YaakovKuperman, Obama proposed something needs to be done. He doesn’t even know what’s in the bill. The bill was WRITTEN in the House by House Demoncrats “edited” (more pork was added) by the Senate and then Obama signed it.
