Manhattan Court Misquotes Founding Father

court hammer4.jpgNY1 Reports: It’s a place where people are asked to be as accurate as possible, but the Supreme Court building in Lower Manhattan has been misquoting one of the nation’s founding fathers.

The famous building has a quote from George Washington carved above its columns. The inscription reads: “The true administration of justice is the firmest pillar of good government.”

But the actual quote, in a letter Washington wrote in 1789, uses the word “due” instead of “true.”

“They fight for truth, and justice, and what is it? The letter or the word of the law. And, to have that pointed just makes everything just so ironic to say the least,” said one New Yorker.

“I think it should be whatever makes sense to the most amount of people. And, I understand what that means. I’d probably wrinkle my nose if it said due administration. Because that doesn’t necessarily mean true anymore, as we’ve learned the hard way,” said another New Yorker.

So far, there are no plans to change the wording.
