City Hall – Councilman Simcha Felder (D-Brooklyn) expressed his opposition to two bills that would increase the number of tickets written for car idling violations.
“The City should be showing restraint and cutting back on overly-aggressive ticketing practices instead of finding new ways to fine honest taxpayers,” says Felder. “We need to put an end to this ‘ticket-first’ philosophy and focus on educating drivers as to why idling is harmful.”
The New York City Council will vote Wednesday on two bills that would expand the number agencies that are authorized to issue idling violations and would make it illegal to idle longer than sixty seconds outside of schools.
“It’s obvious that as soon as this bill passes and takes effect, ticketing agents will be lining up outside of schools with stopwatches,” added Felder. “That’s not the way we should be treating parents.”
The Environmental Protection Agency says that idling for any time longer than ten seconds is worse for the environment and your car than turning off and restarting your engine. Felder says that this is a fact of which most drivers are unaware.
“If New Yorkers are educated as to the health and financial benefits of turning their cars off, they will act responsibly and these tickets will not be necessary. With the economy as it is, instead of bombarding people with more tickets, we should be finding ways to direct resources to outreach and education.”

ooft, its much much easier to raise the registration fee by 50/100 bucks and leave everyone alone. the stress that everyone deals with to find a place to stop their car for a minute, forget even park is insane already…
This all revolves around the global warming HOAX which we all shoveled some 3 inches of this morning. Al Gore Yemach Sh’mo and his global warming hypocrisy should go someplace where were know it to be VERY hot!
from now on when you stop at a red light, shut your engine or you’ll be ticketed
Do I have to turn off the motor when waiting for a red light, for fear of getting a ticket for idling? After all, it looks like red lights are bad for the environment.
simcha if you really want to help the citizens of new york city please do the following. for years it is public knowledge that every police precinct in new york city must produce a certain amount of ticket revenue for the city. many unjust tickets are given out and people have to shell out big bucks for no reason.
SIMCHA IF YOU REALY CARE ABOUT THIS PRACTICE THEN YOU WOULD HAVE THIS PRACTICE STOPPED.
