Warning: Con Ed Impersonators Hit Staten Island

ConEd.jpgA warning was issued Tuesday night to Consolidated Edison customers. People are posing as utility workers in an attempt to get inside homes.

As CBS 2 HD found out, one of the suspects is a woman.

“She said ‘I’m from Con Ed and I’m trying to save you money on your rates,'” Chris Ditoro said.

From a front doorstep, a scam was in the making.

“I talked to her through the glass to see what she was all about,” Ditoro said.

The woman posing as a utility worker did everything she could to get inside.

In her mid 20s with long black hair and power company identification, she told the man if he let her in, she could help him save money on his electric bill.

“At first she caught me off guard,” Ditoro said.

Then the homeowner noticed a car with two strangers inside parked across the street.

“I realized this didn’t seem right. The ID didn’t seem like a Con Ed ID. She flashed it very quickly, something wasn’t right about it,” Ditoro said.

The man’s reluctance paid off — and introducing her to his German shepherd didn’t hurt.

“She finally decided to leave,” Ditoro said.

When she left, so did the car.

There are concerns about whether it was a robbery plot, or identity scam. Now, an alert on the crew has been issued to other homeowners on Staten Island. The players seek entry as Con Ed workers, asking to look at your bill.

“Con Ed says it checks homeowners’ bills from its database and not by visiting customer’s houses,” Councilman James Oddo said. “Too many New Yorkers see a uniform, feel obligated to give information to those who may or may not have ID. Don’t give information, get information. Tell them you’ll call their boss the next day.”

The question is: what were they really after?

As for Ditoro, he’s glad he didn’t find out, but he’s concerned for others in his Bulls Head neighborhood.

  1. This lady came around Flatbush a few months ago. She came to my door and said she can save me money on my con ed bill. She asked if she could give me an application to fill out. I said no and she got all defensive saying “you don’t trust me”. I said I’ll call Con Ed if I’m interested and she left.
