New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg says Gov. David Paterson is asking the city to take on an unfair share of budget pain in tough fiscal times.
Bloomberg says city officials had the good sense to anticipate the recession and trim the budget in advance, and now Paterson’s proposal would penalize the state’s economic engine.
Bloomberg says he understands that local governments will be hit by budget cuts.
But he says New York City is getting it the worst in Paterson’s proposal, which would exclude the city from getting state aid for local governments.
The mayor also asked lawmakers to allow municipalities decide how to spend any money they receive through a federal stimulus because local officials will best know how to spend it.

Before you go on writing that NYC pays the lowest in real estate taxes & therefore suggesting that we shall pay at least what suburbanites are paying, it would be a good idea for you to examine & look on the full picture and getting ALL facts straight.
NYC residents pay city income taxes of up to 4%, while all you suburbanites do NOT pay any city income taxes. That’s an additional $2,000 in taxes on someone earning only $50,000 (low income by our heimishe family standards) & $4,000 on someone earning $100,000. In addition, we NYC residents are also blessed by paying the highest sales tax, gas tax, cigarette tax, & other user fees than any other region in the state. Not to mention the high fines & tickets that we have to pay which should not make you suburbanites so jealous of us.
The real fact is that NYC residents pay the highest amount in taxes & fees than residents in any other city in the ENTIRE USA!
