The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 16-1 today in favor of Senator Hillary Clinton becoming the next secretary of state under Barack Obama.
The one vote in opposition came from Louisiana Senator David Vitter, who expressed concern in Tuesday’s hearing over former President Bill Clinton’s charitable fundraising overseas, saying it could pose a conflict of interest.
Senator John Kerry, the committee’s chairman, briefly spoke about how Clinton impressed the panel with her knowledge on issues ranging from the conflict in Gaza to American relations with Russia.
The full Senate will vote on her appointment once Obama is sworn-in on Tuesday.
Clinton and Vice President-elect Joe Biden will deliver their farewell speeches to the Senate today.
