Taxi and Limousine Commission officials are considering a pilot program to mount digital cameras inside yellow cabs.
The cameras would record images on the road in front of the cab, as well as images from inside the taxi.
The cabs would also be outfitted with data recorders that would record unusual movements such as skids and swerves.
The Committee for Taxi Safety says the systems would help identify reckless drivers while also helping to clear drivers involved in accidents who are not at fault. The comittee says it is still researching the technology.
Some livery cab and limousine companies have had success using the systems.
The TLC is recommending the program be voluntary because of the cost of mounting cameras.
Advocates for drivers are already criticizing the plan, calling it an invasion of privacy.
