Yemen to Build Ghetto For Jews

yemen11.jpgTwo weeks after the murder of Moshe Yaish Nahari HY”D, the brother of Yemen’s Jewish community’s head, the country’s president Ali Abdullah Saleh pledged to build a secured Jewish ghetto in the outskirts of the capital San’a.

The new neighborhood will house the 300 Jews of the Umran province where the murder took place.

Yemen’s president has informed human rights organizations and the heads of the Jewish community in the country of his decision to allocate an area in Sana’s northern suburb for the construction of a residential neighborhood for Jews on the state’s expense.

Any family who decides to move there from Umran will receive $10,000 in compensation.

According to President Saleh, the Jewish neighborhood will be guarded by security forces at all hours.

Since Nahari’s murder dozens of Jews in Umran have reported receiving death threats and falling victim to violent harassment in the streets of the Umran province.

A Yemeni judge on Monday ordered the man accused of murdering Nahari to go for a medical checkup to determine if he was competent to stand trial.

At the opening of the trial, lawyers for defendant Abdel Aziz Yehia Hamoud al-Abdi appealed to the judge that he was mentally unfit to stand trial and asked for a medical examination.

“Every one who knows him, knows he is insane,” lawyer Khaled al-Shalali told the court, describing the defendant as a retired pilot in the Yemeni army.

  1. I am a from Yemen.
    Let me correct the report.
No one in the Yemen community has been told that the Government will give them the sum of $10,000 USD to build a house in Sanaa.
All they were offered was a plot 5 libne (about 4000 square feet) and maximum of 400,000 Yemen Rials, which is about $2000.00 usd.

The big problem was the Jews would go now until they have the development built is still not clear.

The Nahari family is still in the week of Shivah, they face many problems until they can get out from Yemen.
Some other Jewish Families are planning to depart Yemen as soon they find a location that fits their needs.
They are calling all over the world to search a democratic Country who is ready to help them re-establish. They will need a place with Yemeni friends and relatives who are observing the ultra orthodox Yemeni Yidishkeit. They need an area with Schools fit for the children etc.
Some families would choose to relocate in the Yemenite neighborhood in “Bnei Berak” in the area were the Yemeni families of Torath Avot are residing”. The problem is now that the Israeli government doesn’t help nor finance such relocating cost.
Others would like to relocate to Lakewood, N.J. were they have relatives, others would like to in Monsey, N.Y. were the Yemeni families have a new established community with Rabbi Sh. Chatuka as a Rabbi. So it’s a question if they will find who will help them with a US visa and re-establishment financial support.

  2. Is the word “ghetto” YWN’s description or Mr. Saleh’s? A ghetto is for making sure people stay IN. That’s not the problem, as Mr. Saleh surely knows. He has to keep the terrorists OUT. That’s done by imprisoning them, not by ghetto-ing the victims. Is he incapable/unwilling to do that? Maybe it’s past time for the Yemenite Yidden to move … elsewhere. Do we have any relocation experts?
