Poland’s President Celebrates Chanukah In Historic Visit To Warsaw Shul

pp.jpgPoland’s president has celebrated the start of Chanukah with Warsaw’s Jewish community – the first time since World War II that a Polish head of state has attended a religious service in a Shul.

Also in attendance were First Lady Maria, Poland’s Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich, Secretary of State at the Presidential Chancellery Ewa Junczyk-Ziomecka, and a number of local politicians.

Kaczynski entered Warsaw’s Nozyk synagogue – the city’s only surviving prewar Shul – just after sundown. The congregation rose and a group of Jewish children sang “Shalom Aleichem.” The president lit a candle for a silver Menorah.

The Jewish community is describing Lech Kaczynski’s visit Sunday as a historic step.
