FDA May Pull 2 Popular Asthma Meds Off Shelves

ai.jpgTwo popular asthma drugs may be pulled off store shelves after a Food and Drug Administration panel says they’re simply too risky for you to take.

The FDA had been considering calls to pull four popular asthma drugs from the market after studies found patients taking them were at higher risk of some serious side effects, including respiratory problems and even death.

After two days of testimony, advisors are recommending Serevent and Foradil no longer be used to treat asthma. They spared Advair and Symbicort from their recommendation.

All four drugs contain ingredients to relax tight muscles around narrowed airways, but that may mask symptoms that can trigger life-threatening attacks.

The two drugs the FDA says are still safe, Advair and Symbicort, contain a second ingredient that reduces inflammation inside breathing passages that may help patients avoid problems.

Some doctors urged the FDA not to pull the drugs, saying it could trigger a dangerous surge in cases of uncontrolled asthma, especially in children.

But Advair, the most popular of the medications remains on the market and may be used as an alternative for patients on the drugs that are slated to be discontinued.

  1. Ventilators for Asthma are highly addictive, how do I know- for a year I was on a daily regimen of using an inhaler. I had to use the inhaler three times a day. When it was time to use the spray I remember, gasping and wheezing until I sprayed. In addition to all this I saw an Aler gist several times a month, who gave me an injection to ease my breathing. Then I took control of my life made Diet Changes, had acupunture treatments, Used Homeopathy and a Neti Pot. What I noticed was my breathing improved as well as my dependency on using my inhaler. Hashem was the one who healed me, he wanted me to try to take some control of my health.

  2. moderator, please post this. there is absolutely nothing objectionable in this post, though neither was anything in the last 5!

#1: there are two types of asthma, stressed induced, and allergic. you must have had stressed induced, which could be agitated by heavy weight. but someone who has allergic reactions that trigger asthma, you can have all the homeopathy you want, and eat the healthiest diet in the world, and it wont help one bit. and before you say all an allergic person has to do is not eat the foods they are allergic to, you should know that bees, which one has no control over, fish oils, which are released into the air, and animal dander and smell all can cause reactions.

another thing is inhalers are not in any way addictive. this is a medical fact. there is nothing in them that will cause addiction or that the body will stop reacting to, as #2 suggested. the reason people tend to need it more and more is many times psychological. also, they say that over 60% of inhaler users actually do not use them correctly, so they never really get the full dosage, causing the reaction to not fully subside, and needing a second and third dose.

  3. Um, #1, clearly your asthma was not well managed. If you’re using your inhaler more than than *2 times per week* then your doc needs to step up your treatment by adding a long-term controller medication.

In terms of these meds, there’s been a black box warning all along for all long-acting bronchodilators that they should only be used if the patient is not sufficiently controlled on medium dose steroids…

  4. Health-The inhaler I used was very addictive for me. BH I was open to Holistic Health and Nutrition. Eliminating Dairy Products helped a lot, and eating Macrobiotic ally was a big plus. The Netti Pot opened my nasal passages so I could breathe. I stopped my visits to the allergist, and stopped spraying the Asthma Medication. I substituted Nutritious Foods that helped boost my immune system. I probably still have Asthma, but not like it was when I was spraying to stay healthy. I went beyond the Standard Ashkenazim Diet (SAD) to healthier level.

  5. I also had severe asthma and it was completely gone after 2 years of regular use of chinese herbs formulated for respiratory and immune system function. The company producing these herbs is called Sunrider.
I also went off all soy and dairy and ate whole grains and whole foods.

i agree drugs are generally poisonous, and are exceedingly overused. almost no one should be taking statins

i think the allergy thing is a way overdone fad.

nutrition, if it starts getting complicated is also just a faddish replacement for drugs (not necessarily a bad thing.)
    nutrition is pretty simple
bulk of diet should be vegetables and whole grains
some fruits, nuts and seeds and a little meat and milk products if you want.
