Getting a seat on a New York City subway is not always easy during rush hour. But it will soon be impossible on some cars.
You’re probably used to standing on a subway car anyway, but what if your subway car had no seats at all? You could find out soon.
“Seat-less” subway cars are coming. The seats will be locked in the upright position during rush hour to squeeze in 18 percent more passengers.
They’re already trying this in Boston.
“Overcrowding remains,” Metropolitan Transportation Authority Executive Director Elliot Sander told CBS2 HD. “At least for NYC Transit, [this is] the single most challenging operational issue that we have.”
As such, Sander says by late next spring the MTA will be rolling out a train where four of the 10 cars will have flipped up seats during rush hour as part of a pilot program to ease the overcrowding.
It’s a program that some riders say they won’t stand for.
The idea comes at a time when the MTA is looking for fare increases and some say taking away seats is like paying more for less.
There is no word yet on which subway lines will be tested with the “seat-less” subway cars.

A Yid git zich an eitzah-i’m sure someone will figure out how to unlock em..
will some be unlocked for the elderly, disabled, very pregnant, etc.? Hope Toronto doesn’t pick up on this idea!
like the chazon ish zt”l said about whether one should stand or sit during the kedusha of “u’va l’tzion”, “es zitst zich nisht gut mit mir” (it doesn’t sit well with me)
they have something similar to this in paris, although the seats arent “locked” during rush hour, they just “bounce” up if no one is using it, and it is just understood that unless u are elderly or otherwise are in need of the seat, when the subway is filled to capacity, it is just plain wrong to sit. and the system works really well. why the need to “lock” the seats? I think the idea is a great one, but there needs to be some sort of compromise for pregnant women, infirm, etc.
Bring your own folding chair.Fare should be less for standing room only cars. More people using the subway, less people driving, less motormen and conductors working, less trains running all make a very unpleasant situation.
Either it won’t happen because advocates of the homeless will sue for denying them a place to sleep, or it will happen, and it will cost the city millions to pay compensation to them.
So let’s see if I have this straight……first he wants only those who can afford to pay tolls on the brooklyn bridge, etc. to live in this city, and now Bloomberg doesn’t want the elderly and pregnant women to live here….. What’s he thinking??!!
Hey smh1, if you are not my son-in-law, I hope one day I merit to be your mother-in-law. Such sensitivity to us elderly!!! Such nachas!
Maybe next Mr. Sander with require everyone to be coated in a lubricant of some type so that even more bodies can be sqeezed onto each car..Give me a break! Sander has gone mad…
amazing how with over 2 million riders extra per day– even with discounts, this easily is more than a million dollars a day EXTRA — just over the past few months. raising the fare and lowering the quality is classic of government run organizations. just like the post office raising prices and cutting workers and the IRS raising taxes and spending our money recklessly. at a time like this, its interesing to see what mr. celente of the trend institute predicts— people will not STAND for any of this. riots will soon ensue and america cannot last as a superpower under these conditions……
