4:20PM EST: According to an initial report by the BBC, six gunmen were reportedly been shot by Indian security forces at Delhi’s main international airport.
The report prompted major news outlets such as Fox News, Associated Press, and others to report the same information. Additionally, YWN received dozens of emails in the past few minutes alerting us of the incident.
Shortly after the BBC posted their initial alert, they changed the posting on their website to say the following:
“The police force in charge of security at Delhi’s main airport has denied reports that people have been shot and injured there.
Police are investigating “two sharp sounds that were heard at the airport”, the force told the BBC’s Delhi bureau.
Earlier, airport officials said shots had been fired, and that several gunmen had been killed or injured.”
YWN can confirm that although there has been a serious terror-alert which was issued by intelligence agencies earlier today – in this current incident it appears that the BBC reported a “scare” as an actual shooting; and in fact no-one has been shot. There are some reports of three rounds going off in the airport, but none of anyone being shot.
Earlier Thursday, three major Indian airports have been put on high terrorism alert following warnings from intelligence agencies.
An e-mail to officials at the Delhi airport warned of hijacking and terror strikes from the Deccan Mujahideen between Wednesday and Sunday, IANS news agency reported, citing official sources.
The little-known organisation has claimed responsibility for the Mumbai terror attacks.
