The southern areas of the Catskills and Hudson Valley got slammed Tuesday with strong winds and heavy rains, causing flooding, downed trees and power lines.
The further north you went, the precipitation became mixed. In the Middletown area, snow and rain mixed at a heavy pace and strong winds continued to bring down tree limbs.
In Sullivan and Ulster counties, snow was widespread. In Hardenburgh, over a foot of snow was reported and north of Liberty, several inches of snow fell.
First Responder Wireless News reported that a Mobile Medic EMS unit had overturned on Route 55 in Eldred. There were no patients on board and minor injuries among the staff.
Speed limits on the Tappan Zee Bridge and some bridges operated by the New York State Bridge Authority had speed reductions and empty or lightly loaded box trailers, box trucks, modular homes and any similar vehicles were instructed to pull of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge during the height of the strong winds in the morning hours.
Meanwhile, fierce winds and heavy snow associated with a powerful cold front have caused widespread and extensive damage to NYSEG’s electricity delivery system. There are widespread power outages in many areas. In addition to the local NYSEG personnel, additional line crews and support personnel were brought in from around the state to assist with restoration efforts. NYSEG crews worked throughout the night restoring power, and restoration efforts will continue until power is restored to all customers.
Ulster County was hard hit with 2,500 power problems, primarily in Woodstock, Ellenville and Saugerties. Orange County is facing roughly 150 outages, and the Neversink area of Sullivan County is also struggling.
Orange and Rockland customers were pummelled too, with more than 17,000 power outages reported. Crews restored service to all but 250 homes this morning, the utility reported, and expect to fix the remaining problems by 4 p.m.
NYSEG customers throughout Sullivan County are still in the dark today. The utility reported 2,300 customers without power this morning in Sullivan County. Spokeswoman Brenda Patton said Thompson and Hancock were hardest hit, with more than 700 outages combined.
