This evening around 5:30PM a car going to a Sukkos celebration at a Day School in New Milford NJ was struck by a stolen car being chased by police. Inside were a mother, her daughter, son and his friend. The young girl was R”L killed and the two boys and the mother were seriously injured.
Both boys are 9th graders at the Frisch Yeshiva High School in NJ. The name of one of the boys is Aviezer Bouch ben Mindel Golda – he is reportedly in serious condition.
Although it is known that both families are from the Fair Lawn, NJ community, the name of the girl has not yet been released by police as of 11:00PM.
The girl was reportedly in the backseat of a Honda Accord driven by her mother when it was struck by a Mercedes-Benz stolen from a house in Bergenfield, NJ. A 14-year-old seated beside the girl was critically injured.
The ferocity of the collision ripped the Honda in two, with the back half of the car – including the rear seat – sent hurtling to the curb. A 14-year-old in the front seat was also injured, as was the girl’s mother; the extent of their injuries was not known tonight.
The police chase began when a local resident left his keys in the Mercedes while he went into his house to retrieve keys for another car. When the man came out, he saw the thief driving away in the Mercedes. The owner of the car called 911 and pursued the stolen sedan in another vehicle.
Several police agencies took over the chase and followed the car.
The Honda appears to have been making a turn onto New Bridge Road from The Boulevard when it was struck by the Mercedes. The Mercedes, its front end demolished, came to a stop about 75 yards west of the crash site after striking a box truck.
The driver of the stolen car was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. According to reports, he has not yet been charged and was the only occupant of the car.
