Archeologists are extremely pleased over this week’s find in a dig north of Yerushalayim, a piece of limestone from a stone coffin with the inscription “ben kohen gadol” engraved in the side.
The 0.60 meter long by 0.48 meter wide piece of stone is believed from the Second Temple era. The excavation project is under the auspices of the IDF’s Civil Administration and Defense Ministry, headed by archeologists Binyamin Har-Even and Naftali Aizik.
The find was discovered in the Binyamin Regional Council area, an area believed to have been home to the Kohanim during the Bayis Sheni. The assumption is being made that the kohen gadol and his family were buried in the same general area, but since not other remnants have been found to support the theory, it remains in the realm of speculation for now.

1. Near the end of Bayis Sheini, there were many people holding the office of Kohen Gadol.
2. If it is from a coffin, perhaps someone should make sure that the grave isn’t nearby.
Actually, the inscription was “ben hakohen hagadol”, not “ben kohen gadol”, as per other news reports, including photos where the inscription is clearly visible.
