As a crypto user, you have likely gotten some advice on how to keep your assets safe. Much of this has to do with token management and wallet safety. For example, crypto investors are always told not to keep their funds in exchanges but instead in wallets. The good news is that there is a myriad of wallets in the market of all types, which have been known to keep tokens safe for years. As Shraddha writes, some of the best crypto wallets can handle multiple types of assets while still maintaining safety (source: https://99bitcoins.com/wallets/best-wallet-review/).
Unfortunately, keeping your wallet safe may protect you from hacks, but you can still face threats in real life. This is an unfortunate lesson that Amouranth has learned following a recent robbery. Amouranth is a popular online streamer who has millions of followers across multiple platforms. She’s also, apparently, a crypto enthusiast who showed off her earnings to her audience a while ago.
In a tweet from last year, the 31-year-old, whose real name is Kaitlyn Siragusa, said that she was contemplating selling her crypto.
“Help! Do I sell or hold my BTC?” She tweeted, including a screenshot that showed Bitcoin holdings worth over 20 million dollars. This, sadly, seems to have made her a target for thieves, who invaded her Texas home just last week.
On March 2nd, 2025, her home was invaded by masked robbers who shot at her door and allegedly pistol-whipped her. The streamer was then told to log into her crypto wallets and transfer her funds. She managed to log into her X/Twitter account and alert her followers that she was being robbed. Eventually, her husband shot back at the robbers and was able to hit one with a bullet.
“[T]he pummeling felt like it would never end and I protected my head by putting my arms up like I learned how to do in boxing, blood was streaming down my head… They brought duct tape and masks and were armed with handguns,” the streamer said of her ordeal.
But while the intruders were clearly determined to get their hands on her heavy crypto fortune, they left empty-handed. The incident has since been reported to the police, and while no arrests have yet been made, the investigation continues.
It has also sparked a wave of online discussion about crypto safety, especially for high-profile celebrities. As crypto has become more popular, many famous celebrities and influencers have gotten involved, and clearly, many have made money from it. But just like any other asset, like cars or expensive jewelry, showing it off online could make you a target for criminals.
It also shows that as cryptocurrency becomes more prominent, criminals will take their efforts offline as well. We are used to hearing of famous and everyday people having their crypto wallets hacked and their funds stolen. However, it is possible that we will see more incidents of people being attacked in real life, with their crypto being demanded.
It is even more complex because crypto transactions cannot be reversed and are harder to track than fiat ones. Had the intruders succeeded in getting the streamer to transfer her tokens, it would have been much harder to identify them and prosecute.
This means that law enforcement will have to be on its toes when it comes to investigating and prosecuting crypto-related crime. Investors, on their part, will have to take even more real-life precautions as millions of dollars in Bitcoin makes them as much of a target as any other valuables.
