NYS Enhanced Drivers Licenses Available Today

licenses1.jpgBeginning today, New Yorkers will have their chance to buy a drivers license that will allow them to cross the border without a passport.

The enhanced license will be another accepted form of identification when traveling by car or boat to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda.

Starting in June, federal law says all travelers will no longer be allowed to cross the border with just a regular license or birth certificate.

If your license still has some time before it expires, you can upgrade to the enhanced version for just $10.00. The normal cost of the enhanced license is $30.00 on top of the normal license fee of about $50.00.

The average passport, which lasts two years longer, is a little more than $100.

  1. Yonason, I don’t think NJ offers this type of Federal Enhanced license. In fact, I think NY is the first state to offer this type of enhanced license that can be used for border crossings.

  2. Actually the State of Washington began offering it in March. NY is second. The next States are scheduled to be Arizona and Vermont, per DHS. Many states still haven’t planned a timeframe.
