Donald Trump Vows To Try And End Daylight Saving Time Once And For All

President-elect Donald Trump wants to turn the lights out on daylight saving time.

In a post on his social media site Friday, Trump said his party would try to end the practice when he returns to office.

“The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn’t! Daylight Saving Time is inconvenient, and very costly to our Nation,” he wrote.

Setting clocks forward one hour in the spring and back an hour in the fall is intended to maximize daylight during summer months, but has long been subject to scrutiny. Daylight saving time was first adopted as a wartime measure in 1942.

Lawmakers have occasionally proposed getting rid of the time change altogether. The most prominent recent attempt, a now-stalled bipartisan bill named the Sunshine Protection Act, had proposed making daylight saving time permanent.

The measure was sponsored by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, whom Trump has tapped to helm the State Department.

“Changing the clock twice a year is outdated and unnecessary,” Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida said as the Senate voted in favor of the measure.

Health experts have said that lawmakers have it backward and that standard time should be made permanent.

Some health groups, including the American Medical Association and American Academy of Sleep Medicine, have said that it’s time to do away with time switches and that sticking with standard time aligns better with the sun — and human biology.

Most countries do not observe daylight saving time. For those that do, the date that clocks are changed varies, creating a complicated tapestry of changing time differences.

Arizona and Hawaii don’t change their clocks at all.

  1. How is ending DST terrible for Jews? We heard the arguments that keeping it on DST all year will make it hard to daven early but what’s the issue with canceling DST altogether?

  2. This is likely just the beginning. Cuts to SNAP benefits, cuts to Headstart, elimination of ACA subsidies. All these will hurt large frum families. And the coming tariffs and labor shortage will have a disproportionate impact on large families that benefit from purchasing low cost imports.

  3. Year round daylight savings would be a big advantage for those who are required to work on Friday afternoons. It also isn’t a problem for Bnei Yeshiva or anyone self-employed who can always adjust their hours. It might require having more minyanim closer to work so people could get up, commute, and then go to shul rather than davening in their home neighborhoods.

  4. It would only be terrible for Jews if they would keep daylight savings all year round as the Sunshine Protection Act had proposed. If I’m understanding Trump’s proposal correctly, he wants to keep standard time all year, while doing away with daylight savings time, which is the way Hashem intended it to be.

  5. Why is this terrible for the jews? Because it means if you are makpid on zman krias shma you have to wake up early? OY. How many of those davening late really care anyways. I for one will prefer an more normal shabbos in the summer without DST.

  6. BH! It’s so much healthier to align with the sun and the natural body clock.
The days in the summer months are ridiculously long and leave both adults and children exhausted.
Not to mention simchas that start so late and kill the next day.
    Enough already!

  7. Why is it terrible? The summer clock is terrible since in NY Neitz will be around 8:20am, even in camps they change to the winter clock since it is so much better.

  8. The article doesn’t explain the headline! Why is it terrible for Jews?
This means that during the dead of Winter, נץ החמה won’t be before 8:20 am. or thereabout. That makes davening really problematic.
Additionally, school-age children will be going out to the bus in the dark. That, I think, could be a real safety issue especially for the little ones.

  9. @yaapchik

Sorry, I don’t understand. During the dead of winter we don’t have DST, so why would eliminating it during other months affect netz during winter?

  10. Yaapchik … It is the dead of winter. This is how it will be. Standard time is now. Daylight savings only affects summer (some spring & fall).

  11. Still dealing with TDS? How is this “TERRIBLE FOR JEWS”?
The issue was only year-round DST, not year-round Standard Time, as others noted.

  12. Working people don’t NEED birchas Kohanim or any Tefillah at all.
They are Yotze with the Tzibbur, while they are at work.

And you can daven at alos/meshiyakir, at 730, plenty of time to get to the laptop at 9.
Even if daven netz (830 latest), you should be perfectly fine, since work starts at 9.

But we do need to keep Shabbos.
And since the Minhag among non-chassidim is to keep Shabbos from when the Sun goes under the horizon (separate sugya why the later shkiya is the ikar, but anyways)
And most frum people live in places when sundown is at 430 nowadays.
    This is a BIG problem.
People have meetings/work that continue even past 5 sometimes, and there are not many options to resolve it OTHER than abolishing standard time.

THE AGUDAH, AND ASKANIM, SHOULD BE PROMOTING THE ABOLISHMENT OF STANDARD TIME.
UNTIL THEN, THEY WILL NOT RECEIVE ONE PENNY FROM ME!!

In the summer, we can have standard time.

  13. Since when do yidden care about zmanim? They already daven at the wrong times even now. Mincha when it’s pitch dark. Shachris when it’s pitch dark. At landaus there’s a 5:55 shachris and the zman of tallis and tefillin is 6:18 for today. So don’t worry the rules will be bent even if they get rid of daylight savings

  14. OY, all you commenters need to go back to school and learn some reading comprehension!
As all you “Yeshiva” heads should know, this is a situation of “פלגינן דיבורא” – Sentence #1: Bad for the Jews. What’s bad? DST of course. that’s why Trump wants to do away with it (OK, that’s not really why he wants to do away with it, but it sounds good…)

But I do agree that it wouldn’t hurt for YWN to hire some better copy-editors, who can make sure that the headlines (and content) are more easily understood. (Though REALLY good copy-editors wouldn’t allow click-bait headlines, so that might be an issue…)

  15. I always wanted to be makpid on vasikin thank you trump for helping the Jews! If you daven and you can’t find a minyan most will tell you it’s better than than minyan and not vasikin. With better tfilos it’s better for the Jews.

  16. trump bad period. musk worse….now you have all in bed together….zuckerberg bezos and more..shame on you american yidden…shame on you period

  17. Yaapchik, DST is not in effect during the winter, so getting rid of DST would not affect what time it gets light in the morning during wintertime.

You are referring to what would happen if DST were permanently in effect year around. Personally I think that would be much better for those of us who don’t work in the frum community who wouldn’t have to deal with shabbos starting at 4 PM in December.

  18. Sleep and other experts say it would be better to say on winter time year round. Hopefully there’ll be robust public discussion before decisions are taken.

  19. Terrible Headline !?! First of all which kind of jews are you referring to !! Second of all if Trump wants it is good for the jews because he wants his family to be healthy and successful ! President Trump is blessed with divine inspiration to help the USA and the go-d fearing and the jews ! Shalom 😎

  20. Terrible Headline !?! First of all which kind of jews are you referring to !! Second of all if Trump wants it is good for the jews because he wants his family to be healthy and successful ! President Trump is blessed with divine inspiration to help the USA and the go-d fearing and the jews ! Shalom

  21. Very ignorant. Jews have been doing this for thousands Of years and now he wants to fix the way hashem intended and that’s bad? U need professional help

  22. This is embarrassingly inaccurate. The situations/arguments you provided only apply if STANDARD time were abolished and DST were adopted year wrong. Trump is proposing the opposite. Winter would be exactly the same, unaffected. Summer would see it get light and dark an hour earlier.

  23. People are getting mixed up if Trump ends Daylight Savings time that means Standard time the whole year. The only effect it will have os it will get dark in New York aound 7:30 instead of 8:30 in the summer & for those who Daven Neitz it will start @ 3:55 in June instead of 4:55 in New York .

  24. You got it backwards in this article. Having permanent Daylight Savings Time is what you are talking about – that is what is bad. If Daylight Savings Time would be made permanent then in the winter instead of having what we have now, which is Standard Time, it would mean that people would have to daven Shacharis an hour later because of Neitz being an hour later on the clock, and in many parts of the United States they would actually have to choose between going to work an hour late or skipping Shacharis altogether (or davening Shacharis before chatzos during the lunch hour if it’s still not too late, which it probably would be). This would almost mean that many people would have to choose between their work and their davening – Daylight Savings Time is what is bad.

Rubio’s bill for permanent daylight savings time is what is a big problem for both Jews and for society in general – circadian rhythm is thrown off, going to school and work when it’s dark, etc. This is why when they tried permanent daylight savings time in the 70s it became very unpopular very quickly going from 79% of people supporting it before they imposed permanent daylight savings time to 42% support after 3 months – meaning after suffering through Daylight Savings Time in the winter rather than Standard Time. Why is that you may ask? Because people had to live through it and suffer through it.

What is bad for the Jews is also bad for society. Having permanent STANDARD Time is what is good and it is better than the current change of clocks every year for various reasons, including that this will stop the annual push for DST.

One thing I would add is that people still keep their guard up in case President Trump just means that they will end the practice of changing the clocks and rename the Daylight Savings Time to Standard Time. Even though it sounds like he will make Standard Time permanent we should keep paying attention to this to ensure that Standard Time becomes the permanent time rather than Daylight Savings Time becoming the permanent time, with the help of HaShem.
