Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) will be joined by elected officials and community leaders to pay tribute with a presentation to Jack Zelmanowitz, brother of Abraham Zelmanowitz HYD – a true 9/11 hero. “It was only seven years ago that we lost Abe Zelmanowitz in one of the worst attacks in the history of our nation,” Hikind said. “He was an Orthodox Jew, a member of our community, and a loving brother and uncle.

Abraham Zelmanowitz  and Ed Beyea worked on the 27th floor of One World Trade Center at Blue Cross/Blue Shield. They had an enduring friendship based on their shared love of music and books. Three days after the attacks, Abe was singled out for recognition by President Bush for his ultimate act of compassion, his heroism, and his humanity. When the tower was hit, Abe could have saved himself. He chose to stay behind with Ed, a quadriplegic, sending Ed’s aide to safety, sanctifying God’s name with his sacrifice.

“Abe wasn’t a fireman, nor was he a police officer. He was a regular guy who would not abandon his friend during a harrowing ordeal, and their final moments were spent together. His stunning sacrifice is an inspiration to his family and his community.”

The memorial ceremony will take place at the studio of artist Jodi Reznik, 1305 East 17th Street (L-M) on Thursday, September 11th at 4:00PM.

“Artist Jodi Reznik has managed to capture Abe’s humanity in this stunning depiction of one of our great American heroes,” Hikind said.
