NYC Officials demanded change yesterday after a Daily News investigation found widespread elevator woes in public housing projects, just weeks after 5-year-old Yaakov Neuman was R”L killed in a faulty lift.
“We need to have more systematic inspections and a real analysis of just how dangerous these elevators are,” Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer said.
Stringer credited The Daily News for bringing the problem into focus by examining elevator records for the 103 Housing Authority projects with more than 10 elevators.
“This is probably the next frontier in trying to ensure the people’s safety,” Stringer said.
The Daily News report came less than a month after 5-year-old Yaakov Neuman Z”L died on Aug. 19 while trying to jump from a stuck elevator in the Taylor Wyeth Houses in Brooklyn.
“I’m concerned that [Housing Authority] may not have the resources to keep its residents safe,” said Councilman David Yassky, who represents the district where Jacob was killed.
A spokesman for Mayor Bloomberg said he could not comment because of an ongoing probe into the child’s death.
