MidHudsonNews reports: The Fallsburg fire chief and his uncle have been charged with torching a vacant bungalow in Fallsburg last week, Sullivan County District Attorney Stephen Lungen said Thursday.
Edward Smith, 44, had been charged two days ago with setting the fire on August 29 in the Skopps bungalow colony (reported HERE on YWN).
Lungen now said his nephew, James Smith, the Fallsburg fire chief, was arrested Wednesday on the same arson charges.
James Smith, 33, was arrested Wednesday on felony charges of third-degree arson and burglary and second-degree criminal mischief. He was also charged with misdemeanor official misconduct and solicitation.
Authorities suspect that Smith wanted to set the fire so that the fire department could get some training.
The Times Herald Record reports that he was arraigned and is in the Sullivan County Jail on $25,000 bail.
Edward Smith was also accused of the arson at the Skopps colony, located at the corner of Laural Avenue and Brickman Road.
James and Edward Smith each rented apartments in the caretaker’s bungalow at the colony, that is occupied seasonally by Frum residents.

Well I’m glad the fire dp got training fighting a fire and now he will get training sitting in jail
There is no great shame commited by a fireman than being an arsonist!! These two morons put the lives of their fellow volunteers at risk with this supreme act of stupidity. I hope the local law and legal system in Sullivan county throws every charge they can at these two fools. There can be No excuses made for them period!!! I am a life long fire buff and this just makes me sick!!

Why am I not surprised? What with the pick-up trucks with confederate flags and the only reason that miscreant wasn’t implicated was because at 40 something years old he still couldn’t spell. This area is rampant with bigotry and racism and most probably inbreeding where an entire neighborhood of these folks all have the same DNA. What you would probably get if you lined up 15 of Mr. Smith’s relatives is a full set of teeth and an aggregate IQ of 75. It’s not just in Sullivan County but Goshen, Walden and Pine Bush as well. The good news for Mr. Smith is that some Jewish lawyer will probably get him off on some lesser charge for a higher fee reasoning that his borderline intelligence, being a product of incest and lack of teeth forced him to do what he did and that he wasn’t responsible for it.

The firefighters in Sullivan County NY (and all over) put their lives on the line whenever the fire bell clangs to rescue others whether they are seasonal residents or fall time residents. insulting these brave men and women because of the extremely bad behavior of two people is not proper.
Additionally, as a side note, last year on these boards, we learned that our posts make it into their local newspapers and stirs up even more hatred for us.

There is such a “disease” that plagues SOME firefighters,to set fires and be the hero to set the fire out.

Poster # 9 I agree with #10 mdLevine that some of your comments are foolish and you too are unreasonably bigoted towards our Gentile neighbors. What the folks reading this site need to remember is that in the towns of Fallsburg, Hurleyville, Loch Sheldrake, Monticello and many others, some of the volunteers are our Jewish bretheren. Jews have served in the volunteer fire service in Sullivan County for many years and have held important positions within the fire departments of their communities and have been honored for their service. Whether Jewish or Gentile, these men and women are on call 24/7 to be there for their community and neighbors’ protection. Except for the Village of Monticello having several paid full-time members, virtually every other Sullivan County department is comprised of local unpaid and often under-appreciated volunteers. As I said in an earlier post, I have been a fire buff my entire life and have strong connections to the FDNY and again repeat, the actions of these two morons is totally inexcusable and I sincerely hope that they are punished to the fullest extent of the law. I also know that they will be ostracized by their own community and that in itself will be punishment. There may be bigots up there but everybody isn’t totally stupid and this type of action should not and will not be accepted by anyone.

You would be surprised at the number of fires that are set annually by firefighters.

This “excuse” has been documented in a significant percentage of these incidents.
