Ramapo, NY: Hearing on Yeshiva-Dormitory Continues

A proposal for a yeshiva and dormitory off a rural-like lane on the Pomona border will be reviewed next month by the town Planning Board, LoHud.com reports.

A public hearing before the board began to review the proposal of Congregation Khal Torath Chaim of Rockland to expand its facilities because of rising enrollment.

The congregation already operates schools on School Terrace, Ashel Lane and Elyon Road in Monsey. Its latest construction plan is on 17.2 acres at the terminus of Babcock Lane, a narrow byway off Route 306.

The property borders the controversial Patrick Farm, where the town has downzoned the perimeter for houses on 1 acre and the interior for multifamily housing.

A wider road has been sought by Hillcrest Fire Company No. 1, not only for this project but also for smaller residential subdivisions that previously were proposed on the site.

Although the 67,700-square-foot building would be four stories high, “the lowest floor will be partially buried, and the structure will conform with the maximum permitted height” of about 35 feet, according to the application.

The developer also anticipates only a slight increase in traffic because the students would be bused there on Sunday mornings and remain until early Friday afternoons.

As for the number of students, initially 160 was proposed, but that number may be reduced, First Deputy Town Attorney Alan Berman said.

There also will be a dozen staff members, including a guard-caretaker living on the property in an existing single-family house.
