A resident physician at NYU Langone Winthrop Hospital, Dr. Zaki Masoud, is facing termination following a controversial social media post where he labeled Hamas’ actions against Israelis as “liberation” and “revolution,” the hospital announced Wednesday.
The backlash began after Dr. Masoud posted an Instagram story that read, “It’s time to be bold with your words. Don’t hesitate to openly state your support of Palestinian resistance. Be loud & proud you’re on the side of justice.”
He further added, “No more walking on eggshells, afraid of what people will think. Let them call it terrorism. Extremism. Barbarianism. We call it liberation. Decolonization. Resistance. Revolution,” accompanied by an image of cheering Palestinians.
The post came under scrutiny after StopAntisemitism, a nonprofit group, raised concerns last Friday. In a public call to action, the group detailed: “On October 7th, after a Hamas attack resulting in significant casualties in Israel, Dr. Masoud labeled the incident a ‘liberation. Resistance. Revolution’ on Instagram,” urging caution for Jewish and specifically Israeli patients in contact with Dr. Masoud.
NYU Health confirmed in an official statement, “Zaki Masoud has been removed from service as a resident at NYU Langone Hospital Long Island. We are following our investigative and disciplinary processes.”
