Tuesdays Fatal Route 17 Accident

nysp1.jpgA man was tragically killed Tuesday afternoon on a Route 17 off-ramp when the white Ford Bronco he was apparently working on rolled on top of him.

The accident happened approximately 1:50PM on the Exit 113 off-ramp of westbound Route 17.

State troopers have not released any further details about the accident or identified the man, pending notification to his family; although the Misaskim organization confirmed that their services were not needed for the incident.

The off-ramp is on a slope. Authorities at the scene believed that the man parked the Bronco halfway up the ramp after experiencing a mechanical problem and went to check the back of the vehicle. The Bronco then rolled back over him, eventually coming to rest against a guardrail, with the man pinned underneath.

The man was pronounced dead on arrival, and the off-ramp was closed for about an hour as crews worked at the scene.

  1. A very sad story. As one whose vehicle stopped running the other night on an uphill part of rt. 17 near exit 107 this past Sunday night I can relate to this terrible story. If fate brings your vehicle to stop always try to coast to the side of the road if possible, get the EMERGENCY BRAKE ON AT ONCE and put on your four way flashers, then call or wait for help. Having flares in your vehicle is always a very big plus. The main thought here is to stay safe by not rolling backwards or being struck by another vehicle.

  2. I agree with 12786 and usually people want to save time so they try to do their own work even when it’s dangerous.
Like 12786, I also think it’s far better to wait for help and to always bring a working, charged cellphone on trips.
