Donald Trump Involved in Concord Casino Project

trump.jpgThe Times Herald Record report: Donald Trump says he’s in talks to help redevelop the Catskills.

The billionaire celebrity developer confirmed he’s talking with his sometime partner Louis Cappelli about several projects in Sullivan County on the former Concord site, which Cappelli says will break ground around Sept. 15.

Cappelli said that he wants Trump Golf to redesign the International Golf Course on the Concord properties and partner with him on a five-star hotel and spa near the courses, and a 750-room hotel on the former Concord site. He plans to hire golfing great Jack Nicklaus to redesign The Monster.

Cappelli threw out a dizzying array of hotel chains as possibilities for his $1.5 billion plan to turn the seasonal Catskills into a year-round destination.

He is negotiating with Great Wolf Lodge and the Marriott/Nickelodeon to bring a $150-million, 350-room themed hotel and indoor water park in a hilly wooded area on a southwest portion of the property. For a 125-room five-star hotel and spa near the golf courses, Cappelli is talking with Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago, Ritz-Carlton and The Ian Schrager Co., which build The Gramercy Park Hotel in Manhattan. He also plans a $25 million, 60,000-square-foot golf clubhouse with a restaurant overlooking the Monster and International.

Cappelli said he hasn’t settled on a hotel chain for the 750-room hotel on the former Concord grounds, where he is building a convention center and racino, which will have slots-like video gaming machines.

Trump once told The New York Post that he stopped casinos in Sullivan that might compete with his casinos in Atlantic City, but now says “I know the Catskills well” and “it’s been good for us, New York state.
