Passaic firefighters were on the scene of a three-alarm fire at the newly renovated Brook Haven Mall in Passaic, Thursday morning. The new “Aisle One” Kosher supermarket is part of the mall.
According to fire officials, the fire began at approximately 9:15 am in the basement and spread to the loading dock area. Passaic Fire Chief Pat Trentacost noted that the mall had a sprinkler system, which was functioning correctly.
Passaic Mayor Hector Lora stated that the police department had evacuated several individuals from the mall’s Aisle One, a kosher supermarket. The mayor added that the fire seems to have originated in the neighboring factory, with both complexes sharing basements.
Sources tell YWN that the fire is pretty much out, but there is a smoke condition in the basements which is difficult to ventilate. Additionally, Aisle One was not affected by the fire.
The Brook Haven Mall, which was home to Passaic Metal Ware Co, a 100-plus-year-old industrial complex, underwent renovation and re-opened in July 2021. The mixed-use development currently houses a supermarket, a bookstore, a liquor store, a restaurant, and three clothing stores.
Brook Haven CEO Mark Raider told NorhJersey.com that there was a “fire incident in an unfinished part of the building.” He expressed his gratitude to the Passaic police and fire departments for their “prompt response and professionalism.” Mutual aid was provided from Clifton, Paterson, and Wallington to help battle the blaze.
One firefighter was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries.
