The CDC has issued a “serious public health” alert warning of the rapid spread of “extensively drug-resistant” shigellosis.
Shigellosis resistant to medication is called XDR – shorthand for “extensively drug-resistant.” Those stricken with the illness have their intestines attacked and suffer from inflammation, which often results in diarrhea and bloody stools.
Shigellosis can adversely affect anyone, but poses a particular risk for children under the age of 5, elderly people, and those with preexisting conditions.
XDR shigellosis has been on the rise in recent. There were zero such cases in the United States in 2015, but XDR cases constituted 5% of all shigellosis cases in 2022.
“XDR shigellosis is resistant to all generally recommended antibiotics in the United States, making it difficult to treat,” a CDC report says of the illness.
Patients who are sick with shigellosis are being urged by the CDC to stay home, wash their hands often, not prepare food for others, and stay out of recreational water spaces, where it can easily spread.

In certain counties in NJ, Rabbanim have recommended closing all Shuls until further notice, pursuant to the overarching directive of Safek Pikuach Nefesh requiring one to close Shuls, and to be “even more stringent than the CDC”. Kissing the Torah should be avoided.
Restaurants and wedding halls will, of course, remain open.

HaKatan, also the medical science gets the credit for learning how to treat numerous diseases, bringing down child mortality tremendously and extending life-expectancy by a lot.
