DOT: NYC Schools (Yeshivas) to Receive Street Safety Improvements Under “Safe Routes to School” Program

tl.gifNYC Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan today announced the second set of 135 public and private schools to be targeted for far-reaching street safety enhancements under the DOT’s Safe Routes to Schools program. The program has already completed short-term improvements at the first set of schools across all five boroughs, bringing improved crosswalks, new traffic medians and other traffic-calming measures such as speed bumps, new traffic signals and improved signs around 135 schools.

DOT has now identified the next group of priority schools by analyzing the latest available accident data around 1,436 public, private and parochial elementary and middle schools. Of these new schools, 25 are in the Bronx, 46 in Brooklyn, 23 in Manhattan, 33 in Queens and eight in Staten Island.

“Safe Routes to Schools takes a comprehensive view of the streets surrounding schools and tailors our best measures to reduce pedestrian accidents,” said Commissioner Sadik-Khan. “Safe Routes, when combined with safety measures taken under our Safe Streets for Seniors program, comprises the largest traffic-calming campaign of its kind in the nation, and it’s fitting that we are targeting our most vulnerable New Yorkers.”

A Request for Proposals (RFP) for a consultant to initiate individualized planning studies of the next set of 135 priority schools will be released this week. As with the first phase, the new study will identify traffic and pedestrian safety issues and propose short-term improvements and recommendations for long-term capital projects to improve safety.

Since 2006, all the short-term plans have been completed at the first 135 schools, bringing 400 new crosswalks, 56 speed humps, painted medians and traffic calming measures along 14 corridors, and thousands of new signs to schools in all five boroughs. DOT also made signal timing changes or installed new signals at 25 locations and installed four automatic speed boards, which flash the speed of passing motorists. The Department of Design and Construction has begun construction of safety measures that require intensive capital construction at 12 schools and will start at an additional 20 schools next year.

Earlier this year, DOT launched the Safe Streets for Seniors program. This initiative identified 25 senior pedestrian focus areas citywide that combine a high density of senior citizens and a high number of pedestrian accidents or injuries. Safety improvements have already been made in two of the five pilot study areas, including installation of refuge islands, vehicle turning bays, painted medians, extended sidewalk curbs, and improved signal phasing to increase pedestrian crossing times.

Meanwhile, NYC Council Member Simcha Felder announced the installation of a traffic light at the very busy intersection of 51st street and 18th Avenue.  Recently approved by the department of transportation, the traffic light will be installed by the end of August.

“This installation has been a long time coming,” said Felder. “This is a major victory for our neighborhood, establishing our residents’ safety as a priority.”

The intersection has only gotten more dangerous over the years, and without a traffic light, residents have taken the responsibility to push for this change.  Felder says that this positive change would not have been possible without their efforts.

“I would like to personally thank local residents, the Yeshiva Yagdil Torah, and Goldberg’s Grocery for pressing this issue for years,” said Felder. “With your continued support and dedication, we are creating a safer neighborhood for our children.”

  1. Nice to see a couple of yeshivos and Bais Yaakovs getting funding. Oh, incidentally, this is old news. And, it would also be nice if New York City would be willing to fund crossing guards for all of the yeshivos and Bais Yaakovs and not just for the Catholic institutions and for the public schools!
