Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday compared the American support of Ukraine in its battle against Russia to Hitler’s quest to wipe out the Jewish people.
Lavrov accused the US of organizing a “coalition of European countries against Russia by proxy through Ukraine to solve the ‘Russian question,'” comparing it to “Hitler’s mobilization of European countries against the Soviet Union” in its quest to solve the “Jewish problem.”
“They are waging war against our country with the same task: the ‘final solution’ of the Russian question,” Lavrov said, as quoted by Reuters. “Just as Hitler wanted a ‘final solution’ to the Jewish question, now, if you read Western politicians … they clearly say Russia must suffer a strategic defeat.”
White House national security spokesman John Kirby excoriated Lavrov for his statements later on Wednesday.
Speaking at a press briefing, Kirby said: “Our first reaction is how dare he compare anything to the Holocaust, anything. Let alone a war that they started. It’s almost so absurd that it’s not worth responding to, other than the truly offensive manner in which he tried to cast us in terms of Hitler and the Holocaust.”
Israel’s Foreign Ministry responded by stating: “Any comparison or relating current events with Hitler’s final solution plan for the extermination of the Jewish People distorts the historical truth, desecrates the memory of those who perished and the survivors and should be strongly rejected.”
The European Jewish Congress stated: “We are shocked and appalled by the shameful comparison drawn by Russian FM Lavrov between the support of the West for Ukraine and Hitler’s persecution and murder of six million Jews in the Shoah.”
“This is Holocaust distortion at its most basic level.”
In May, Lavrov sparked outrage when he claimed that “Hitler had Jewish blood” and that “some of the worst antisemites are Jews” in an attempt to justify Russia’s claims that they are working to eradicate Nazis from Ukraine despite the fact that the country’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, is Jewish.
Russian President Vladimir Putin later apologized to then-prime minister Naftali Bennett for Lavrov’s remarks.

On that occasion Lavrov was mostly correct. That Hitler had Jewish ancestry is just a rumor, and not very likely, but there’s nothing wrong with repeating it. It’s not antisemitic at all to do so. And the rest of what he said on that occasion was 100% correct.
Actually he’s misquoted here; what he said was that the Jews themselves say that the worst antisemites are Jews. And we all know that is perfectly true. I don’t know whether מהרסיך ומחריביך ממך יצאו is actually true, but it is definitely something we regularly say. (No, that is not what the pasuk means, so doubting its truth is not apikorsus; but we all believe it’s true anyway.)
And the idea that since Zelensky is a Jew, therefore the Russians can’t be eradicating nazis, is too ridiculous for words. Even if Zelensky himself is not an antisemite, he’s definitely got nazis in his army. That’s not even a question, it’s proven fact. The Azov Brigade is not made up.
