12:25PM EST: Five people were struck by lightning at a soccer field in Long Island on Sunday WNBC reported, as severe storms were sweeping through the Tri-State are. The incident occurred at Cantiague Park in Hicksville at 10:15AM, land left all 5 victims with various degree burns. Their exact conditions, names, and ages were not released as of this posting.
Meanwhile, a CBS2 HD meteorologist reports that the thunderstorms approaching the tri-state area are capable of producing penny sized hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 m.p.h. Continuous cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.
Very heavy rain occurring with this storm could cause ponding of water on roadways and minor flooding of poor drainage areas.
The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Brooklyn, Queens, and Nassau County in New York City, Northwestern Burlington and Southeastern Burlington counties in New Jersey, and Delaware County in New York.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for Coastal Ocean, Eastern Monmouth, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Northwestern Burlington, Ocean, Somerset, Southeastern Burlington, Sussex, Warren, and Western Monmouth counties in New Jersey.
