Individuals will be allowed to make sure that their records with the Social Security Administration align with their gender identity under a plan announced Wednesday.

The action, which is part of the agency’s “Equity Action Plan,” follows through on a March announcement to do so by the agency’s acting commissioner Kilolo Kijakazi.

Kijakazi said the move is part of a “commitment to decrease administrative burdens and ensure people who identify as gender diverse or transgender have options in the Social Security Number card application process.” It’s also part of a larger Biden administration-wide effort to increase acceptance of gender identity.

In June, President Joe Biden signed an executive order meant to take steps to advance LGBTQ equality, including “strengthening supports and protections for transgender Americans.”

At Social Security, the agency will accept the applicant’s self-identified gender identity of either male or female, even if it is different from the designation shown on identity documents, such as a passport or state-issued driver’s license or identity card.

The agency says it is exploring possible future policy and systems updates to support an “X” designation for the SSN card application process for people who don’t identify as male or female.

In June 2021, the State Department started implementing procedures to allow applicants to self-select their gender, including an “X,” and no longer required medical certification if an applicant’s self-selected gender does not match the gender on their other citizenship or identity documents.

The Department of Homeland Security has reformed its screening process at U.S. airports for transgender travelers and the Department of Housing and Urban Development has implemented protections for homeless transgender people who seek emergency shelter access consistent with their gender identity.

  1. The US government is destroying our country. This comes from the inside and I am starting to believe all kinds of theories of who in reality controls the FBI and all other government agencies. Society is disintegrating. We need Moshiach now!

  2. To Rosen: I agree – Hashem chooses our genders. But how many choices does Hashem have?

To philosopher: Many people who have all kinds of theories about who controls the government believe it is you and me and the rest of us Jews. I presume that don’t buy that. I have a question for you: when you spoke of who really controls the government, why did you first mention the FBI?

  3. The damage is not only due to the nonseuitnse itself, but by diverting attention from important domestic and internal issues. Public attention is limited: if we are discussing genders, equites, percentage of gender x color pairs on Supreme Court, we are not discussing other issues.

  4. These “public officials” feel like they owe public office by the nature of their election or hiring. Did Congress authorize SA to deal with these issues or they are coming up on their own based on personal agenda?

Some of these issues are on current Supreme Court docket – how much can agencies do on their own. We also have halochos how to respect public trust. Also, worth reading Kafka’s “Castle” that describes these people. Many compare Kafka w/ Bratslaver Rebbe.. R Steinsaltz, for example, says they both depict Heavenly court, the difference being the Rebbe understands what is happening and is comfortable there, but Kafka is totally lost.

  5. why does it matter? it’s just a checkbox on a government form, which has no effect on benefits or contributions. if they choose to fill in “m” or “q”, or leave it blank altogether, the only problem will be in tabulating bureaucratic statistics which nobody cares about. let’s try to worry about more important things.

  6. Social security cards don’t indicate gender. And for a long time now, there is no distinction in how benefits are collected based on gender (age matters most, and to a lesser extent, marital status and history as well as disability, but not gender). So why would an agency that doesn’t pay attention to gender for anything, announce a policy on something it ignores? It would be similar to the USDA announcing national regulations for the human slaughter of unicorns and dragons. It does suggest the Democrats who run agencies are somewhat disconnected from the real world, even by the standards usually applied to politicians, but that is hardly a hiddush.
