2,000 Without Power in Brooklyn: Con Ed Asks Residents To Conserve

ConEd.jpg9:30AM EST: (UPDATE IN EXTENDED ARTICLE) Con Edison is asking all customers in Sunset Park, Bay Ridge, Borough Park and Park Slope to discontinue their use of nonessential electrical appliances, including air conditioning, until problems on electrical power lines serving the area can be resolved. The company is reporting power outages to approximately 2,000 customers in Sunset Park, Bay Ridge, Borough Park, and Park Slope at this time.

As a precaution, Con Edison has implemented an eight percent voltage reduction in the affected area while repairs are being made.

The affected area includes approximately 89,000 customers, and is bounded by 3rd and 4th Streets on the north, the Gowanus Canal on the west, and south and Fort Hamilton Parkway on the east.

Crews are working now to repair the problem. Con Edison has asked its customers in these areas not to use appliances such as washers, dryers, air conditioners and other energy-intensive equipment and to turn off lights and televisions when not needed until the equipment problems are resolved.

UPDATE 10:00AM EST: Once again, Brooklyn South Chief Fox is at the forefront of the situation, YWN has learned.

The Chief has mobilized “the troops”, and is taking all precautions necessary should the power outage spread to a larger area. Con Edison is currently changing “feeders”, which may cause the power to shut down in an area affecting 250,000 folks.

Chief Fox has contacted Misaskim, and has placed multiple generators, and a team of volunteers on stand-by – should this problem escalate. Additionally the NYC Office of Emergency Management has been placed on stand-by.

The affected area is currently in the 68th, and 72nd Precinct.

Chief Fox has added his calls to those posted earlier from Con Edison, that people should immediately conserve electricity in their homes in the immediate area to prevent a larger power outage from occurring.

YWN will post updated information as soon as it is made available to us.

  1. The Misaskim volunteers should really be applaused by their great work, when everyone is vacationing ther’e busy helping others. Let it be cleaning the Teaneck gas explosion on thursday, search for the two teens in the catskills on friday, restoring power now in New York City. Keep up your great work, and may Hashem give you lots of strength to be able to continue serving us with your great dedication.

  2. Monitoring voltage when trying to hook up an RV’s air conditioner once showed that a small votage drop immediately tripped circuit breakers, probably since the same power was needed, and if the voltage drops the current goes up.

Is it safe to drop voltage 8%? Will old apartments still with fuses lose circuits that won’t easily come back if an air conditioner is powered up by someone that didn’t know about this matter?

  3. When they tell everyone to lower their A/C the elderly really take it seriously. My mother-in-law had to call Hatzolah today after my sickly father-in-law fell out of his chair and she nor her aide could lift him up. When Hatzolah arrived they asked her why her apartment was so hot. She was embarresed to tell them that she turned her A/C to 80 degrees. Maybe that’s why her husband fell out of his chair. From heat exhaustion– ya think?
