New York City on Monday launched a nuclear attack preparedness public service announcement, telling its residents that it is important to prepare for a potential nuclear strike on the Big Apple.
“While the likelihood of a nuclear weapon incident occurring in/near New York City is very low, it is important New Yorkers know the steps to stay safe,” the Department of Emergency Management said in a statement.
The department also released a video providing New Yorkers with tips of what to do in the unlikely event of a nuclear attack.
“So there’s been a nuclear attack,” the video’s narrator says. “Don’t ask me how or why. Just know that the big one has hit. OK. So what do we do?”
The tips are simple and straightforward: 1. Get inside a building immediately and move away from windows 2. Stay inside and shut all doors and windows; move to the basement if you have one, and remove your clothing if you were outside during the blast 3. Stay put and stay tuned for further instructions from city management.

Fearmongering 101
In a world where Eric Adams can be mayor of New York and Yair Lapid can be prime minister of Israel, anything is possible. G-d help us.
Such a cute headline, just adorable
Wouldn’t it be more effective to hide under a desk, or better yet just turn away from the nuke as it hits so that it won’t affect you.
Menachem Shmei,
You must be living under a rock to make that comment. Times are so volatile. Do you truly think NYC has ANY interest in scaring people away from the city?? Think just a bit.
We clearly are living in Moshiachs times. May we be zoiche to see Moshiach b’karov!
Hey. The most important rule was omitted!!!
Get the Covid-19 vaccine!
really.
For all of the good Jews waiting in America for a siman from shamayim to get out of there and come home to eretz yisrael, how much more explicit of a siman would you like?
Putin is making Nuclear threats against the US, he has the weapons to do it, he is unstable, and the American government is preparing it citizens for it.
If Klal Yisrael is not on the madreiga of emunah to come to EY on their own for the right reasons, Hashem makes it so that we end up here anyways on much less favorable terms. Wake up yidden.
But the birds with their heads in the sand, will after seeing this, dig their heads deeper into the sand, and call it fear mongering, paranoia, and predictably argue, “well, is EY any safer?”, etc. It isn’t a question of where is safer. It is a question of where are we supposed to be, where does the Torah say Jews are meant to live, and when we get clear messages from Shamayim, do we open our eyes or do we continue to fool ourselves in order to avoid having to face what G-d wants of us, which can be difficult.
May we all have the wisdom to know what is right, and the courage to act on that knowledge.
Seriously? Is this advice just meant to make ppl feel like there IS a safety recourse to being nuked into dust? Whoever hears of ppl surviving nuclear atom bombS by closing their windows? This is like so misleading.
richashu, you know more than gedolei yisroel such as Rav Moshe Feinstein, Rav Ahron Kotler and Satmar Rav zatzal who settled in America and advised their followers to do the same?
richashu: It can’t be denied that you are one of the most sanctimonious people in this generation, and that’s saying a great deal. My, you even claim to know what G-d wants! I am not a member of the Satmar community, but I have learned Sefer VaYoel Moshe. Or will you argue with the mechaber, too?
Lets all be a little bit honest here. There are Gedolim who were against moving to Israel, but the people who want to stay in America, would have stayed regardless of that. Its nothing more than an excuse. People dont stay in America because of Gedolim. People stay in America because they are afraid of challenges and prefer to stay comfortable. That is the truth, so please lets not get into a discussion of Gedolim. If you asked the the Satmar Rav or Rav Moshe Feinstein if its mutar to watch television, or kal vchomer use a smartphone, what do you think they would say? Its not honest to go by Gedolim religiously only in cases where their opinion makes our life easier and more comfortable.
The Ramban was also a Gadol, no less than the Satmar Rav, and the Ramban said that all of the Torah and mitvos that we do in Chutz Laaretz only has value to the extent that it will allow future generations to remember how to keep mitvos when we get back into EY and are able to fulfill the mitvzos properly there.
You don’t have to be a scholar or a prophet to know what Hashem wants- just read the parsha. Its pretty clear- read Shlach. Learn what angered Hashem more than anything else that the Jews did in the midbar- more so than idol worship, more so than znus- for those things only a small portion of Jews for punished. For not having emunah in Hashem and not wanting to take his land, the land he gave us, for that an entire generation- the greatest generation-who received the torah at har sinai and saw the splitting of the yam suf- died out. If you want to gloss over Shlach, and say that its metaphorical or only applies to the olden times, you can do that. But that would put you in exactly the same boat as christians who beeiive in the old testament but say that sabbath and kosher no longer apply.
The mitzvah of living in EY does apply to today, medeoraisa- Rav Chaim kanievskky said so
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=–pKKM5DEJA
– and its clear from how much the Torah focuses on it, that it is, and should be the focal point of Jewish life. We have been in galus for so long that have forgotten the basics of what it means to live a jewish life- living a life of torah in our land- the holy land.
Time to wake up people. Time to come back home.
@UncleMo: Amen! Moshiach is indeed the most important tefilla we must daven for.
RE your question: Yes, New York would put out something like this with no basis. The simple reason could be because they are bored and they need something to keep busy with and get the people excited.
A more sinister reason/conspiracy theory could be that it is a way for people to feel more dependent and bottul to the government. They may have nostalgia to the time of war when everyone felt very patriotic and follows the government like sheep.
@richashu
Why slander hundreds and thousands of Jews? Many, many gedolim were against moving to Eretz Yisroel, so the Yidden who follow those gedolim don’t go. Period. Are there some people who wouldn’t go anyway? Maybe. What’s the difference?
I followed your advice and read Parshas Shlach, this is what I found: The Jews said, “We have sinned, let us do teshuva and go up to Eretz Yisroel as Hashem has commanded!” Moshe said, “This is against the will of Hashem, you will not succeed., for Hashem is not with you” They tried going anyway, and they got wiped out.
But didn’t Hashem tell them earlier to go into Eretz Yisroel?
This story taught me that you can’t prove these things from a posuk in Torah or a certain meforash. It all depends on the circumstances. We must all ask our Moshe, our teachers, and do as they say.
But one thing is for certain: Very soon Moshiach will come, and – after building the Beis Hamikdash (רמב”ם הלכות מלכים פי”א ה”א וה”ד) – he will gather every single Jew from all corners of the Earth to Eretz Yisroel, and every single gadol will agree.
Will Hochul make sure a woman can murder her baby while in there hunkered down?
While a large nuclear bomb exploding in Manhattan would immedately wipe out the five boros, the Russians’ competence has been called into question, so maybe more attention should be paid to civil defense.
