President Joe Biden on Monday patted himself on the back for what he called the “most robust recovery” in modern history – just as gas prices officially doubled since he took office.
“At the time I took office about 16 months ago, the economy had stalled and COVID was out of control,” Biden’s official Twitter account posted. “Today, thanks to the economic plan and the vaccination plan that my Administration put into action, America has achieved the most robust recovery in modern history.”

The president’s self-congratulations isn’t a feeling shared by most Americans. 8 out of 10 rate the economy as “poor” or “not so good,” according to a recent WSJ-NORC poll, and 35% said they are not at all satisfied with their financial situation – the highest such number since the question was first posed 50 years ago.
Meanwhile, gas prices hit $4.86 a gallon on average on Monday, more than double the $2.39 average per gallon the week Biden became president.
“The president seems to be taking a lot of credit for what would have happened pretty much under any administration, because we had a situation where the economy was essentially flipped off and then flipped on again, and there was going to be a very sharp recovery for the most part because it was such an unnatural type of recession,” said Taxpayers Protection Alliance Executive Director Patrick Hedger.
“But so, for him to say that Americans should feel more grateful, is really out of touch. Because the most basic things Americans need from gas to food are the prices are pretty out of control.”
