Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) welcomed NYS Comptroller Thomas Dinapoli at an event with Jewish community leaders at Liberty Pointe Bank. As the fiscal watchdog for the State, Comptroller DiNapoli’s office is responsible for the multi-billion dollar pension fund, approval for state contracts, and is the caretaker for $9 billion in unclaimed funds which belong to New Yorkers. “Tom is a real mentch; I can’t think of anyone I’d rather have keeping the State’s books. His honesty and integrity are above reproach, and he is compassionate,” said Assemblyman Hikind to rousing applause from the assembled group of legendary grassroots organizations. In attendance were representatives of M.A.S.K, Agudath Israel of America, Our Place, Nachas Healthnet, Bikur Cholim of Boro Park, Shomrim, A T.I.M.E., Mekimi, Ezer L’Nefesh, Masbia, Yad Ephraim, HASC, etc.
“These are really tough economic times, and we have to make sure that the people that are hurting the most don’t suffer more. These organizations are irreplaceable. They may have started out in living rooms, around a kitchen table, or in a hospital room, but because of the growing populations and clients they serve, they can not continue without government assistance. This is the best money New York State spends, on its people, on its children, on its future,” said Hikind.
DiNapoli spoke of his special affinity with the Jewish community, growing up with his grandmother Janette, whose real name was Concetta. But a Jewish childhood friend of his grandmother’s couldn’t pronounce Concetta and so anglicized her given Italian name, and she was forever thereafter known as Janette, to her parents, husband and eventually grandchildren. “That is what is so beautiful about New York, the childhood community relationships that last for generations, and forever influence our lives,” said Hikind.
“There is a great commonality in my community’s traditions of family and faith,” said DiNapoli. “Dov understands that we need to be outspoken on important issues. Dov Hikind is one of the beacons of light in this state. That’s the kind of leadership we need. I’ve looked for opportunities to weigh in on the big issues of our times.
“Doing business with companies who do business with Iran and Ahmadinejad is not something New York State can easily abide. The Holocaust denial and incitement to genocide against Israel cannot be ignored. My fiduciary responsibility as the custodian of the State’s pension fund, obligates me to have the Office of the State Comptroller take a closer look. We’re looking at everything including divestment from these companies. People like Dov remind us that we must confront evil when we see it. I am humbled by his friendship and we are there to partner with you. You all can count on us for friendship and support,” added DiNapoli.
