The price of a gallon of milk in New York jumped 44 cents today to $4.37, and a retailer who sells above the threshold price may be in violation of the law.
State dairy officials blame a number of factors for the rising prices, including rising costs of fuel, feed, and energy, and the Midwest floods, which have diminished corn supplies used to feed cows.
The state price for a half gallon is now $2.24 and a $1.15 for a quart.
The price of a gallon of milk has now gone up 72 cents since May. But it’s still less than the all-time high of $4.54 set last August, and three-cents cheaper than at this time last year.
