Heavy Storms Hit Tri-State Area, Reports of Tornado Touchdown in New Jersey

weather2.gif8:00PM EST: Thunderstorms threatened the Tri-State area Sunday night, with warnings and watches posted throughout the afternoon.

Some communities have sustained damage. Storms were being blamed for bringing down power lines in West New York and New Jersey. PSE&G said it was in the process of repairing those lines.

Meanwhile, flights headed for Newark International Airport are experiencing average delays of about 2 hours because of storms in the area, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Flights heading to JFK International Airport in New York are experiencing average delays of about 2-and-a-half hours, the FAA reports, while flights to LaGuardia International Airport in NY are experiencing delays of about 2 hours and 44 minutes.

Con-Ed said in a statement that a little more than 2,000 customers were without power. Most of the outages were on Staten Island. The others were scattered across Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.

PSE&G said 5,000 customers across Middlesex County had no electricity. The utility said it did not know when power would be restored.

In Middlesex County authorities are investigating whether a tornado touched down in the town of South Brunswick during the storms late Sunday afternoon, reported MyCentralJersey.com reports.

Onlookers said trees were pulled out of the ground and branches were snapped off, crashing onto parked cars in the town, the Web site said.

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch in counties across New York until 11:00PM EST Sunday evening.

The area includes Queens, Staten Island, Manhattan, Westchester, Rockland, Bronx, Orange County, and Brooklyn.

Hail up to 2 inches in diameter, dangerous lightning and thunderstorm wind gusts up to 70 mph are possible in these areas.
