Based in New York City and New Zealand, DHD Architects is a firm that is more than its name suggests. DHD is ingrained in a project from the very beginning, from the ground-up architecture and site development to interior design and fine art consulting.
DHD’s work is reflective of principal David Howell’s creativity, drive, and unique view of spaces and those who live and work in them. The company offers a clear vision for design and a forward-thinking approach to creative, stylish yet practical architecture. DHD Architecture is distinctive. Leading the companies interior design team is Howell’s wife and business partner Steffani Aarons.
The team at the high-end boutique architecture and design firm is on the smaller side, which brings more time and personalization to each project. Howell and his team like to combine both New York and New Zealand architecture and design theories together in unified spaces that blend classic, traditional architecture of America with a looser, environmental, indoor-outdoor living feel that has long been desirable in New Zealand and Australia.
Outstanding service comes first at DHD, which works with customers closely until a final project is completed. Ideas become reality through a combined vision that’s grounded in thoughtful planning and respect for budget. DHD’s design work is your work.
DHD residential projects alternate between the dramatic and the sensible, the modern and the classic. Past projects integrate white oak with stunning balconies, crisp kitchens with robust libraries. DHD’s interior designers integrate rugs, lighting, colorful wallpaper and furniture according to the wishes and tastes of client.s
DHD works in a variety of spaces and sizes, from large-scale home additions to warehouse renovations, beach homes, and city lofts. DHD’s new builds are on mountainsides and apartment skyrises thick of neighborhood blocks, multi-use buildings in museums, and commercial spaces in Los Angeles.
DHD also works in the commercial industry, building Coach stores and new hotels, flagship clothing stores, restaurants, and bakeries.
DHD interior design is clean and detailed, whether it’s a loft, apartment, and townhome, or a family home. Clients can work closely and carefully with DHD to integrate just to right touches to their spaces, from the dark wood paneling framing a loft and accentuating richly colored furniture to classic wood shingles in the Hamptons complemented by Corian countertops and a knife-edge marble countertop.
DHD’s in-progress projects reflect the company’s flexible and eclectic tastes. A ski house in Alta, Utah, is designed to blend into its stark, snowy surroundings. The West 16th Street condo in Chelsea boasts a steel frame clad in bluestone masonry. It will accommodate 14 high-end apartments and a roof-top spanning penthouse, defining boutique luxury.
Over on 83rd Street in the Upper West Side, DHD architects are working on a residential building in warm brick, with four full-floor condos, two duplexes, a back garden, and a penthouse terrace on the sixth floor.
Howell and his hand-picked team of DHD architects, associates, and interior designers work in unison on each project, helping bringing to life new ideas, integrating a favorite texture or unique building materials. DHD is also committed to preserving the integrity of the city blocks where they work and having architecture fit in with existing surroundings, not compete against it. Every single space the company’s team works on is distinctly DHD.
