Former Police Officer Chauvin Gets 22 1/2 Years In Prison For George Floyd’s Death

Former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin has been sentenced to 22 1/2 years in prison for the murder of George Floyd, whose dying gasps under Chauvin’s knee led to the biggest outcry against racial injustice in the U.S. in generations.

The punishment handed out Friday fell short of the 30 years that prosecutors had requested.

With good behavior, Chauvin, 45, could be paroled after serving two-thirds of his sentence, or about 15 years.

  1. I wrote it many times, I will write it 1 more time. I watched the trial. Had I been 1 of the jurors I would’ve found him not guilty. Had I been the president I would’ve pardoned him. His name is Derek but the judge is a Drek. I hope he appeals in another state (republican).

  2. Yossef, it’s true that Chauvin was wrongly convicted and does not deserve this sentence, but I’m puzzled by what you could possibly mean by appealing in another state. How could he possibly do that? How could any court in another state even consider a crime against the state of Minnesota? The only possible appeal is to the Minnesota Court of Appeals, and then to the Minnesota Supreme Court, both of which would be biased against him. (The 3rd degree murder conviction is very likely to be overturned automatically, when the MN Supreme Court rules on Mohammed Noor’s appeal of his conviction for killing Justine Damond. But that won’t affect the 2nd degree murder conviction.)
