  1. The U.S. Navy has started a series of tests on its newest and most advanced aircraft carrier by detonating powerful explosions to determine whether the ship is ready for war. The first of the tests, which are known as Full Ship Shock Trials, occurred Friday when the Navy set off a giant explosive event near the USS Gerald R. Ford, according to a statement.

Images and video footage showed an enormous burst of water shoot from the ocean as a result of what carrier officials called a 40,000-pound explosive. Video of what the explosion looked like from the carrier’s bridge wing was posted to Twitter.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the explosion, which occurred in the Atlantic Ocean off the Florida coast, registered as a 3.9 magnitude earthquake.

  2. I thought all unmitigated tragedies were only able to befall us during the 3 weeks; Obviously the 3 weeks aren’t necessarily any more dangerous than the rest of the year:- I could bolster this statement:- Meron; Bleachers;

  3. I watched some of the live stream on ABC News and multiple interviewers keep saying they have the best sonar equipment and dogs on site. Why didn’t they pull anyone out yet?

  4. Food for Thought:
    Let’s try it:
In the merit of, stopping to argue with one another, trying to be extra friendly with everyone, stop bad-mouthing, stop snitching on your fellow men, stop stealing in a professional way, maybe think for a few moments before you shoot out a sharp comment to another person,
In the merit of all this, may God watch over all of us and may God protect all of us 24/7.

  5. R”L מי שאמר לעולמו די יאמר לצרותינו די!
We all need to do teshuva… we need the geula shleima bi’meheira!
Just a thought and correct me if I am wrong… This meshunadika tragedy is sekila. The onesh for chillul Shabbos is sekila. A year or two ago, R Shlomo Miller shlit’a wrote a letter that the eruv in Miami and Surfside is pasul due to the docks that open to ocean. Not one reputable posek disputed this. Miami fixed their eruv and Surfside didn’t, and everyone continued to carry every Shabbos r’l…

  6. Drugs in LA. Apparently the explosion was 100 miles off the coast. Many other buildings from North Carolina to South Florida would have collapsed.

  7. glattkup – that is horrible and stupid what you said.
There is no skila for carrying beshogeg, there is no skila for carrying in a carmelis, and its horrbile to think that Hashem would kill people for that.

  8. @glattkup

When pointing out areas that need to be worked on, it’s so easy to pick areas that others are doing. Why don’t you pick something that you are doing that you can fix?

  9. With all the tragedies happening recently, so close together, I too was wondering: what’s the message Hashem is trying to give us? Then I realized, Meron, the Kolin disaster, And this all have a common theme: people being trampled/smooshed to death. Almost like Hashem is saying STOP “trampilling” your chaveirim….. The new trend of where insulting and putting others down NEEDS to stop. THIS IS NOT A JOKE. EVERY ONE OF YOU KNOWS WHAT I MEAN IN YOUR OWN WAY.

  10. 147, nobody ever told you that all unmitigated tragedies were only able to befall us during the 3 weeks; if you really thought that (and I don’t believe you did), you must have imagined it on your own. Our sages told us that such events are more likely during the three weeks, and we are required to believe that. Your conclusion that “the 3 weeks aren’t necessarily any more dangerous than the rest of the year” is not only unsupported by your data, it is also מכחיש מגידיה, which is a category of kefirah.

  11. In reference to glattkup’s comment and the negative comments that followed; Our Jewish belief is that nothing in this world happens by chance. Everything is the hand of Hashem. When we see such a tragedy, we should try to learn the meaning of it. Although we may never know the correct meaning behind Hashem’s actions, I believe that glattkup made a valid point. If Rabbi Miller shlita claims that it’s not a valid Erev, his words should not be ignored. If we all learn from this to have more “yiras shamayim” and be more careful with Shabbos observance, then this tragedy will be a zechus for the unfortunate victims; that through them, people will be more careful with “shmiras Shabbos.” So, I think that glattkup’s comment is beneficial for the victims.

  12. Glattkup: To attribute a building collapse to a pesak by rabbi miller requires a Navi. Are you a certified shoteh?

  13. Why is it that every time there is a tragedy, a few of our regular naaviim come out of their holes to share their views as to the inyan that caused the tragedy (aka insufficient attention to tzinius, talking during davening, lashon haroh, treif eruv etc.). These idiots can’t help themselves irrespective of the hurt they may cause to an already suffering tzibur.

  14. Yeshivabachur, but Hashem DID do this. So are you suggesting the victims did much worse things than chilul shabbos? Since you are such a baki on things deserving of skila, please enlighten us so we don’t get such undeserved punishments.

  15. Oops I got your username wrong. By the way, it isn’t a carmelis. It’s not a rural area. The Mishna Berura says any urban environment should qualify as a reshus harabim.

  16. @izzyny you can not decide for snyone what the reason for something happening…not only is it completely asinine its also insensitive.

  17. Hey fellow commentators please
STOP ARGUING, this is not what the injured need at this moment from us.
    Hashem expects unity!
And you Mr. YWN, please filter those machloikes comments and do not post them! Thank you

  18. Let me apologize for my previous comment and clarify at the same time: No one has the right to say why something happened.  Very often victims of terrible tragedies are very special people and we aren’t expected to understand the ways of Hashem in that kind of way.  We do know, however, that every major world event has a message embedded for klal Yisroel, and the closer to home the louder the message. According to my Rosh Yeshiva, Hashem speaks in a way that we can understand, otherwise there would be no point.  Loss of life and property is a constant in tragedy, and is hard to use as a message. What is bizarre in this case is the way they died.  “Building like this don’t just collapse in America.  That is what got me thinking. The message is for us, not the victims.  What is Hashem telling us? The victims fell 12 stories and if they survived the fall there were crushing stones falling on top. To me that screams skila, (makom gevoah followed by a stone).  Skila is extremely chamur and is limited to avodah zara, a few rare averios, and of Shabbos. To me the fact that this happened in the only community that has been publicly rebuked for not having a kosher eruv, and not fixing it sounds like a message loud and clear.  If you hear a louder message, please share.
What should we do about personally? A decade ago there was a horrible story where ehrlicha yiden were being fed treife meat. When the story broke, people everywhere were devastated! People were crying. The fact that we don’t react that way about Shabbos – a whole community with a pasul eruv r’l! – our lack of reaction is a global problem, we all have to upgrade our chashivus of Shabbos.
